Both 'Master Mono' and 'PCM' are unmuted in the live session. Please
check the data sheet for the ES1371 regarding the former control.

Daniel, thanks, unmuting PCM was enough. I can't believe I did not
notice it. I used alsamixer, which I am not very familiar with. (Lubuntu
does not have complete graphical audio mixer installed, by default.)

Thanks for reporting this bug. If I understand you correctly, you filed this
bug (and corresponding information) when sound was not working. Would it be
possible for you to run a Live-CD, when sound is working, and then collect some
alsa-info information?
BTW there are some contradiction in information about whether or not user
should be in audio group:
