unfortunately the problem must have been more deep-seated. I already looked
at the sound preferences. I looked at the sound troubleshooting page and
installed the new version of ALSA (1.0.23), and then the sound worked again
(so my problem is fixed, though maybe

It appears the master mixer element is likely turned down too low. Try
either adjusting the volume control in the sound preferences, or from
the drop down meny when clicking the speaker icon in the top panel.
