and are called fglrx, but for this please open onther report typing in a

We installed the 2.6.38-rc7 Linux kernel as per the instructions above.
It did fix the shutdown problem. The computer reliably shuts down now
without issue.
On boot though, before the Ubuntu splash screen comes up saying for ata
1 and ata 2: softreset failed - driver not ready. Then it says

I recommended to the owner of the computer which would not shut down to
do a BIOS update if one was available. He did, and it is shutting down
normally now! Thank you for your assistance!

Same problem here, Intel D945GCLF2 motherboard.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1615768 shows that working on GRUB
doesn't fix the issue.

I've done some tests today and I think this is kernel related. I tried
the 2.6.35-22 kernel on 10.04.1 and I got the same symptoms with 10.10.
If I boot up with the 2.6.32-25 kernel, everything is okay, my notebook
shutting down as it should.
