I have the same problem still with ubuntu 14.04, and have had it for a long
time. Can't ecactly tell since when. But it must have been years.
It's reproducible. It happens every time after resume. Maybe not if the resume
lasted only for half a minute.
What may contribute is the fact, that I
[Expired for telepathy-gabble (Ubuntu) because there has been no
activity for 60 days.]

After suspend, all gabble/jabber accounts in Empathy report Network
Error and do
It seems this is a bug in empathy and not telepathy-gabble. I've used
empathy daily for over a year now and this has never happened so I've
just rolled back to the lucid release of empathy empathy-common
(2.30.0.1-0ubuntu3) and I can now suspend and resume with empathy re-
connecting instantly.
Here is the log from gabble.

this could be due to the fact that when you resume from suspend your
internet is not connected. that delay might be causing the problem but
empathy should do better
