Thanks for that tip -- still doesn't solve the problem of indicating the
state of Shuffle and Repeat but at least now I can get to the menu versions
of the checkboxes.

Hmm, I may not be understanding the issue you're reporting.
I assume you mean you're enabling the gtk interface, then detaching the
menubar, and there's no way to get it to reattach to the UI?
On maverick I'm not seeing an option to permit detaching the menubar or
other menus. Can you re-test
part of the problem is that I am unable to undo the process so as to tell
you what you need to know! What I did was to take the freshly installed
10.04 distribution audacious, which unlike the prior 9.x versions is
apparently no longer two packages (one for gtk) but a single unified package
with
