So what did that command actually do? Is this something that could be
permanently fixed in Ubuntu/Firefox so future users don't have to run
the command?

The command made metacity the default window manager instead of compiz.
Compiz is having difficulty getting along with intel video cards. As i
thought, this is a duplicate of bug #664265

Looks like a duplicate of an existing bug i worked with. Try this,
---MAKE SURE ALL FIREFOX INSTANCES ARE CLOSED!---
1) In a terminal type this exactly: metacity --replace exit
2) Start up firefox and try viewing the video again.
