Yeah, I didn't mention that I played with them, and several options worked, but
mono makes sense. I saw when I selected it that Master muted, while Master
Mono, only remained on. It did work, but since the device for sound output had
only one option Internal Audio Analog Stereo Stereo, I
amixer settings after setting to analog mono / amplifier.

No sound from speakers, but works with head phone - Meekrat
I agree that the setting is completely unintuitive, but unfortunately
it seems this is necessary due to your sound hardware's wiring.

Hmm, we already unmute 'Master Mono' in the alsa-utils initscript. I
wonder why this setting didn't take by default.
Actually, I see why (since you're using PulseAudio):
1) You don't have a 'Speaker' mixer control, so the default analog-output.conf
path is used. In this path, you'll see:

I found I get sound out the speaker by enabling other things in
alsamixer. I enabled several things at once. I should really go back
and find out just what it was that actually made a difference. Right
now, I just unmuted and cranked up the dbgain in: master mono, line,
line jack, mic (yes, I

It looks like it's sufficient just to un-mute Master Mono, increase the
db gain, and also ensure PCM is un-muted.

Okay, thanks for the `amixer' output. Does muting 'External Amplifier' make
any difference? If so, does reverting the 'Headphone Jack Sense' control
still allow for audible speakers when headphones are unplugged? Do the
speakers then mute properly when headphones are plugged?

No sound from
No, setting External Amplifier off makes no difference. I still get
nothing out of the speakers (head phones still work).
