Hmm, we already unmute 'Master Mono' in the alsa-utils initscript.  I
wonder why this setting didn't take by default.

Actually, I see why (since you're using PulseAudio):
1) You don't have a 'Speaker' mixer control, so the default analog-output.conf 
path is used.  In this path, you'll see:
[Element Master Mono]
switch = off
volume = off
Hence 'Master Mono' is always muted in the "Analog Output" profile.  So, here's 
where we need some trickery.  Which other choices are available in the dropdown 
menu seen via Sound Preferences > Output > Connector?
