This is not fixed. Tested on a Samsung q530 with Natty Beta 1 and the
brightness indicator displays but the brightness does not actually
change. At least the panel no longer becomes inaccessible after
attempting to change brightness but the brightness does not change.

** Description changed:
- I installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx successfully on my new notebook of type
- Samsung Q330. Also the latest updates are installed. However I noticed
- that I can't control the display brightness correctly with the hot-keys

As this has now been fixed in the Kernel I marked it as fixed (this kind
of change only normally occurs in new versions of Ubuntu where the newer
kernel is included as backporting it would induce a high risk of
breakages).

Hi Tom,

To answer my own question, this has been fixed in the new 2.6.28-4
Kernel and should work on an uptodate install of Natty.

Already a few days ago Greg Kroah-Hartman announced that new Samsung
laptop-driver will be added to the kernel:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/2/9/334
Is it possible the patch the present Lucid kernel also with these drivers?
Maybe all problems with Samsung notebooks belongs then to the past.
Will this land / has this already landed in Natty as current workarounds
do not seem to be working any more with 2.6.38 (and xbacklight reports
that the display no longer has a brightness property).

This fix does not appear to work in Natty. The line has been changed to:
ENV{DMI_VENDOR}==[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*,
RUN+=keyboard-force-release.sh $devpath samsung-other
by default which should have the same effect to your changes.
I managed to fix this by adding the lines:
setkeycodes e008
I am on Natty which is currently running that kernel and I can confirm
that it does not work by default.

I have tested the natty kernel too. Same behaviour like before. It
doesn't work with this kernel. The workaround described above allows
correct brightness control but no WLAN control.

Hello
Can you please, from synaptic remove the 2.6.35 kernel ,typing linux in serach
box, then install the most advanced disposable:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.37-rc7-natty/
following the same procedure described above.
Thanks
Fabio

Now I tested the mainline kernel without any success. For this I removed
the above mentioned fix first. Also in both cases the WLAN hot-key
(FN+F9) is still not working.

Hello,
I have solved the problem already by following. I included my notebook
type Q330 in
/lib/udev/rules.d/95-keyboard-force-release.rules
in the line
ENV{DMI_VENDOR}==[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*,
Can you please install the latest mainline kernel from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc1-lucid/
installing:
linux-headers-2.6.35-020635rc1_2.6.35-020635rc1_all.deb
on first then header and then image for your architecture.
Thanks
Fabio
