PresuntoRJ, do you have any steps to reproduce the issue again? We need
to know what's going on, but from your comments I can't determine if
it's a missing dependency or what happened (it could also be some
packages temporarily missing on the mirrors too), since reinstalling it
started to work
I have just upgraded from the previous kernel with sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade... it installed without any error messages, and from the boot,
the failed to get to the GUI.
I have figured out I needed to boot from a previous version (which worked),
then apt-get autoremove --purge the image, headers
Wtf? somehow the metapackage “linux-headers-generic” wasn’t installed.
After installing it, it pulled the headers for the newest kernel and
configured the nvidia driver. now everything works.
But srsly; I’m sure i didn’t mess with them, so how could this happen?

Ok, so I assume then this is either a missing linux-headers-generic
issue, or something was bad and reinstalling the packages solved, not a
real bug. PresuntoRJ, if you see this issue again please reopen, thanks.

It makes no sense to consider this bug invalid!
If there is a mandatory package for it to run (with GUI) it MUST be set on
the deb itself as a dependency that MUST be installed so the installation
process (apt-get install...) would also get it. Its a bug on the packaging
(.deb) of the package.
hum... well, as I have said before, reinstalling the kernel/headers and dkms
solved for me... not sure what is going on with the other users affected.

Can you attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the failure case?
** Changed in: linux
i just read it and am too drunk to do anything useful, so i (hopefully)
will try it tomorrow.
why should it be useful, though? i already installed one update, which
didn’t change anything.

no problem :)
@bug: it’s really strange.
even if i select the last kernel working with nvidia, ubuntu starts with “low
graphic settings” and after selecting “boot into terminal”, X11+nvidia starts.
(nouveau is no option since i need 3d for minecraft and nouveau hangs my system
randomly)

quick question, does your grub start in graphics mode or as text in the
console? any way, can you try to change the /etc/default/grub file so that
the option GRUB_TERMINAL=console is not commented (removing the #) and then
sudo grub2-update to apply the change?
I have tried this in my system and
me too. i use kubuntu natty now and it brought no improvement.
i have a geforce gt 230m and up to kernel 2.6.35-28, everything works.

Don't get me wrong, but I believe you need to post a new bug, since you are
not using the same kernel in Natty (you could, but you would have to
manually choose it in the Grub menu during the boot, if you haven't remove
it yet). My Natty systems are running 2.6.38-8. Please, check again if you
are
why would i post in this bug report if it didn’t occur since the upgrade
from 2.6.35-28 to 2.6.35-29? it did.
it’s only that i still have the problem with the newest kernel in natty;
that’s additional information, not a new bug. -.-
