Audio player doesn't allow for audio volume changes

Did some fiddling around, it seems to be an issue with a file lock in
the ~/.pulse directory. Deleting this directory and doing pulseaudio
--start allowed me to access the Sound Preferences menu and change
volume by fn f11/fn f12, along with mute with fn f10, however, the sound
bar in the
