Maybe this info will be useful for us...
This is the standard situation on my vaio sb:
$ xinput --list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointerid=4[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PS/2 Mouse
As far as I know, it is for all of those mysterious ALPS devices that
are not recognized as touchpads. The patch is distributed from Dell,
that's why it mentions their models. My laptop happens to be Precision
M4600, if that helps.
One of the frustrating things about tracking this down is that
Dear Paul, are u sure it's a universal fix that works for all models, or
just work for Dell laptops ? Since in the patch I see some keyword like
Dell Latitude E5500.
P.S. , what model are u using ?

Same issue here on Dell Latitude E6320. Scrolling on the side works, but
there is no way to access/change touchpad settings.

Touchpad
I have the same issue with my Acer 532h. I have had no luck with this
touchpad and it is very frustrating. I was so happy to see that the
touchpad tab in the mouse settings was back in this release, only to
find I have no scrolling.

Sounds like a kernel issue with your specific hardware. Can you run
'apport-collect 784965' in a terminal?

Sorry I forgot to mention I am working on Ubuntu 11.04 of Simplified
Chinese. The attachment may cause confuse. The point is there's no
touchpad tab in the picture, or else there should be 3 tabs in the
gnome-mouse-properties GUI.
