Hi,
Cleaning up old issues - to set a valid fqdn you can just use hostname:
"sudo hostname you.domain.com" will set the files accordingly as needed.
Then the subsequent (re)start of amavis will work.

I tried sudo myhosts_name -fqdn /etc/mail (I substituted my hosts
name in the angle-brackets) and got (after entering my password)
[/etc/mail is my mail_directory]:
sudo myhosts_name: command not found
I even tried: hostname -fqdn /etc/mailname and got:
bash: /etc/mailname: Permission denied

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
amavisd failed to start because /etc/mailname does not exist. You can
work around this by creating it, i.e.
sudo hostname -fqdn /etc/mailname
Of course, it shouldn't fail because of that. amavasd-
