I tried adding the line you mentioned...it had no effect after rebooting. When I opened the file...it was empty until I added this line...could that be right? The only thing I have not done yet is trying the 'kernel switch'...I am not sure if I need to go there, and I am nervous about doing that

This problem manifests in a Thinkpad T42 running Feisty. I noticed a new package named linux-mages-2.6.20-16-386 and thought this would be an official substitute for the adhoc one at http://rookery.ubuntu.com/~kyle/kernels/salgado/2007-04-25/. Doing nothing else, this does not fix the problem.
