Okay, that starts to make sense; I wondered if it might be something like that. Would you mind booting to a LiveCD and see if the hang reproduces? What I'm thinking is that it's not unusual for random config files, settings, etc. to accumulate over time. In theory Ubuntu should work fine swapped

Huh, this is weird. You got an intel GPU hang/recover, and the i915 driver is loaded, but you don't seem to have any intel graphics chips in your pci list, but rather a radeon card. And you have some sort of virtualbox thing going. Having both i915 and radeon kernel modules is probably not going
