I experienced this problem too. Kinda hard to remember my wifi passwords...
I'm really screwed...
I am running Kubuntu32bit on a netbook, and did the dist-upgrade.

The wifi did not connect, then I went to go vi
Well, here setting the /apps/nm-applet from 3 to 2, and then restarting
nm-applet ended up with all the wireless and VPN configurations properly
imported.
The stamp value returned to 3 after nm-applet started but everything was
nicely imported.

There's not; this stuff should all get migrated to system-wide
connections.
Something to try in gconf, in /apps/nm-applet, there is a "stamp"
variable you may want to set back to 2. Kill off nm-applet first and
restart it once that's done... but no garantees this will help :)

Yes, I indeed found them in gconf. However it would be nice to spare
joe-average-user the scare :)
Is there a currently a work-around that will automatically restore my settings
(better said: make them visible in network-manager)?

Your settings should be still available in gconf. You should be able to
use the settings there to rebuild them as a workaround until this is
fixed.
