FWIW, I don't see this problem. Can those affected please report if a
virgin account (one that has never been used before) shows the same
symptoms?

are indeed seeing the same issue. If in doubt, open your own ticket.
Everyone, thank you for reporting. I think this may be fixed in 1.4.9
which is about to be released in Karmic. Please verify.

I also just installed Hardy RC and get this crash on Gnome login.
Here's my list of installed scim packages:

I get the same apport report on Hardy beta, strace for scim attached.
