Thanks whardier, I disabled Raid in bios some time ago since I wasn't
going to use it and got tired of see the message on boot. Will reset
bios and see what happens.

I am having the same issue. I am attaching lshw/lsmod/dmesg reports.
The lshw is from edgy.
This is a Dell Precision 670 with a defaulted bios (Rev A07) and
hyperthreading turned on. No SATA raid enabled in bios.
For some reason it is trying to probe each SATA port as PATA with a
master and sla
Enabling SATA Raid in the bios allowed the adaptac bios to offer the
right configuration to the kernel. new lsmod and dmesg in the
attachement.
I now have sda/sdb vs broken/broken.

"irqpoll" boot option seems to have eliminated some messages and allowed
for quicker booting from live cd.
Following dmesg result using irqpoll:
