Hi Robert, I retested this x100e (201011-6817) with 11.10 - I can not
reproduce this bug. The install worked flawlessly (worked on the first
try) - It boots with Unity running and everything is functional.

Ok, for the first step, can you boot with nomodeset and see if it gets
farther into the boot process? Does the machine completely power off
(LED's go off) or is it just the screen? Is caps lock flashing? If it's
just the screen, can you still log in remotely via ssh? We are going to
need some logs
Marking back as triaged, as Jeff replied to the question

Looks like the screen didn't survive the modeset. Also it sounds like a
different issue from udos's permissions issue. I'll have someone look in
to this.

James: Negative... this resulted several times from fresh installs of
Oneiric. I then installed 11.04 and that worked fine on the first try.
I did attempt an upgrade, and to be honest, I don't recall if that was
successful or not (and apparently, I neglected to mention the result of
the upgrade

@Jeff:
Was this the result of an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10? Sounds like it is
based on comment #3. If so I think it is safe to close this as a dup of
bug #858122 , due to the comments from udos about the /run/lock -
/var/lock fix.

Here's a short video. For investigative purposes, I caught grub and
removed the quiet and splash options from the boot options. Then I shot
this brief video. Note that we get some messages, then the panel just
turns itself off. At this point, the system is hard locked and must be
power-cycled
Marking this as a regression as well, as the past two releases booted
fine on this machine, so this is unique to a new release (Oneiric)
