Hello,
a quick update. Upgrading to 12.04 did not solve the problem, sound
isn't working anyway. But this is no longer important for me, as I won't
be using this laptop anymore.

There is properly a fix for your problem it Ubuntu12.04. At this time it
is not planned as far as I can see to backport it to the kernel3.0.x
serie and with this to oneiric.
So, the chance is bad to get this fixed in oneiric.
Is it possible to you to make a distribution upgrade to 12.04? And

I looked at the manual and I don't think your BIOS has an option to
disable/enable the codec.
I'm running out of ideas (other than resetting the BIOS and /or updating it). I
guess you could also try booting with acpi=noieq parameter.
Hopefully, a dev will have some clearer ideas..
