Thanks Ludovic. For the record, the procedure above works (inserting the
token in the host after the guest is started, then attaching the device
to the guest) did the trick.
You can now close this non-bug now.

Sorry for the late reply, side-tracked.
Problem is that if I do that the card is powered off. So VirtualBox
can only find the reader but --as the card is not powered on in the
host-- it reports: Reader found but no card inserted.
However this seems to be an issue with the underlying host OS
Connect you token _after_ having started Windows.
And don't forget to disable pcscd if you want to use your token inside Windows.

Short answer: kill pcscd on Linux if you want to use the reader inside
virtualbox.
vmware has a faked reader so may use the Linux pcscd.

Hello again,
I've now recompiled the binary with the line #define
DISABLE_ON_DEMAND_POWER_ON uncommented and now the card is not powered
off.
However, the exact same behavior occurs in both VirtualBox and VMware.
in the first case (VirtualBox) pcscd spins around the same lines (see
attached

Thanks Ludovic for the quick reply pointer. I Will recompile the
source to keep the card powered on.
However that might explain (?) the VirtualBox scenario, not the VMware
one (the card is powered on / LED is green -- it's even flashing yellow
signaling something is actually read from the card
