The server detects that it can't run with AIGLX, and so disables it.
This seems pretty clean.

I have the same issue in the development installation, gutsy. If it's
true that fglrx doesn't support aiglx, shouldn't aiglx refuse to load if
it sees fglrx being used? ie. Isn't there a cleaner way to fail than
this?

that's what I was using. That's what I used to enable fglrx.
So should it enable Xgl as well?

Try the restricted-manager, which should make your config work with
compiz. Proprietary Fglrx driver does not support AIGLX.
