Yep. update-grub script was changed. At least they were considerate enough to leave a backup, which I restored. Afterwards, using the edgy liveCD and learning how to mount my rootdir, I found out that the 2.6.20 image was in fact installed. I reinstalled grub from the edgy liveCD, and edited

You probably have a corrupt liveCD, and your computer is having problems reading files and directories. Can you perform a 'check CD for defects'? If this doesn't report any errors, can you attach the output of /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman Thanks -- update-manager 6.10 edgy - 7.04

Hmm, from the log it is unclear if this is a liveCD issue. However, in any event, it may be filesystem corruption. Can you attach the previously mentioned files, and also the output of 'dmesg'. Thanks. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Needs Info **

I didn't use a CD, I did an Online update. I logged in as root, and ran update-manager -c -d (and I ran gpg before that). btw, my ubuntu doesn't boot anymore (kernel panic). I'm a newbie and I'd have to find out how to get to the partition and the files requested... (and someday try again

Forgot to say, just in case it helps... My PC dual boots Ubuntu and WinXP via grub (gfx version). On Grub I've tried with recovery mode and get Kernel Panic too. I vaguely recall the error message saying something about not being able to find the partition. I'm at work now, sorry can't say more.

Yes, it is likely to be your grub setup. If you've changed the setup, then the default /usr/sbin/update-grub script may not work (or your replacement, if you've replaced it). This may be a duplicate of bug 94718. -- update-manager 6.10 edgy - 7.04 feisty https://launchpad.net/bugs/95910 --
