Hi, I am neither a pro, nor know computers very well. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on T60 fresh install and had the same sound issue. It was not present in 10.04. I, by chance, open alsamixer and changed s/pdif p setting to ADC from PCM and this problem was gone. I hope if this helps other people
