I think I found the culprit. I put back the regular Ubuntu kernel, and
installed a newer version of the Nvdia driver from
ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. After doing this I can't reproduce the
problem any more. I think it's some bug in the proprietary Nvidia driver
that ships with Ubuntu which has
I spoke too soon -- it happened to me again. It seems that this problem
doesn't happen (or happens far less often) if the laptop is suspended or
resumed when connected to an external power source.
