[Bug 56877] Re: synaptic doesn't work; aptitude does
I'm not sure where you have libvte4 0.13.5-0ubuntu2 from. I'm pretty sure that package has never been published for Dapper. Do you have any third party repositories enabled? ** Changed in: synaptic (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Needs Info -- synaptic doesn't work; aptitude does https://launchpad.net/bugs/56877 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 56877] Re: synaptic doesn't work; aptitude does
This was caused by a backport of vte by a third party. [Bug 56877] Re: synaptic doesn't work; aptitude does
The package that's been broken (libvte) has came from a 3rd party repository (one of the compiz ones), not from Ubuntu, so no it's not a ubuntu bug. libvte is the embedded terminal used in synaptic/gnome-terminal and others. ** Changed in: synaptic (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: synaptic = vte -- synaptic doesn't work; aptitude does https://launchpad.net/bugs/56877 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 56878] No more sound (VIA 8233) in Dapper after upgrade from Breezy
Public bug reported: I upgraded from Breezy to Dapper last night. But, right at the end of the upgrading process, it gave an error and I had no other choice than to abort the upgrade. I believe the error it gave was an error 3, I don't remember the description. It was given as it was setting up the firestarter package. As it turns out now, something has gone bad with my sound. This however, may not be the only thing that is not good right now, because i had to abort the upgrade prematurely. When I boot up now, Dapper gives fails for Loading hardware drivers (the error message is udevd-event[4648] run-program '/sbin/modprobe/' abnormal exit) and for PCMCIA services, but the system does not halt. Doing another sudo apt-get dist-upgrade does not do anything, so it seems to me that Dapper thinks that the upgrade finished properly. Here are the outputs of some commands: alsamixer function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device aplay ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1305:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:819:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave aplay: main:544: audio open error: No such device lspci :00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. This is a bit tricky to solve. [Bug 56882] /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh should be in usplash package
Public bug reported: Hi, There is a difference about this file in ubuntu and in debian. This file is needed by the package usplash to work, but while in debian it's packaged in the usplash package ( http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelistword=usplashversion=unstablearch=amd64 ) in ubuntu it's in the lsb-base package. This file should be in the usplash package like in debian because only usplash needs it. I downloaded the version of that file that is in usplash package in debian and the one in ls-base in ubuntu and made a diff: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ diff -Naru Desktop/lsb-base-logging.sh-debian Desktop/lsb-base-logging.sh-ubuntu [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ So they are exaclty the same. this /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh can be used by also other bootsplash programs, this is why i'm asking to change the package of that file. thanks ** Affects: lsb (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh should be in usplash package https://launchpad.net/bugs/56882 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for getting back to me. The current situation is that it says Song from Album by Artist. The song will always be by the artist; but if the album is a compilation, it's wrong to say the albumn is by the artist. My suggestion is to say Song by Artist from Album. Then if the albumn is 100 Best Rock Classics Volume 1, you only give Starship credit for We Built This City and not for the whole album. [Bug 55950] Re: [Bug 55950] Re: [dist-upgrader] aborts if no breezy main is in the sources.list (only breezy-updates main)
Hello Sebastian, you say to replace the word breezy by dapper in all the file. but what about the deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 5.10 _Breezy Badger_ - Release i386 (20051012)]/ breezy main restricted entry ? This would result in: deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 5.10 _Breezy Badger_ - Release i386 (20051012)]/ dapper main restricted, which is not very clean... You mean I just need to make substitutions in the deb http:... entries and ignore the cdrom entry? I understand that this is for bug tracking only. I don't try to get support via the bug tracking system; I went to the ubuntu forum, but did not find the exact procedure to solve my problem, moreover I opened this bug because the error message I got told me to do so. Goodbye, Le samedi 19 août 2006 à 08:27 +, Sebastian Heinlein a écrit : There is no need to install all updates of your breezy system - the updates are only of the breezy and not the dapper circle. [Bug 56891] sort's -u is Failing to Check all -k fields for Uniqueness.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: coreutils Tested with sort 5.2.1 from coreutils 5.2.1-2ubuntu0 and sort 5.93 from 5.93-5ubuntu4. sort's -u (unique) option isn't working as expected and the info (spit!) documentation doesn't match its behaviour either so I'd expect one or the other to change. Given: $ echo 1/3,1/2,1/1,2/1 | tr , \\012 | sort -t / -k 1,2 1/1 1/2 1/3 2/1 OK. Add -n (numeric): $ echo 1/3,1/2,1/1,2/1 | tr , \\012 | sort -n -t / -k 1,2 1/1 1/2 1/3 2/1 Still OK. Add -u (unique): $ echo 1/3,1/2,1/1,2/1 | tr , \\012 | sort -nu -t / -k 1,2 1/3 2/1 Despite sorting on fields 1 to 2 inclusive the unqiueness has been judged on just field 1. At least that's my guess at what's happening, backed up by: $ echo 1/3,1/2,1/1,2/1 | tr , \\012 | sort -u -t / -k 1,1 1/3 2/1 and: $ echo 1/3,1/2,1/1,2/1 | tr , \\012 | sort -u -t / -k 2,2 1/1 1/2 1/3 I'd expect that if sorting on N fields, lines omitted due to -u have to match the line output in all N fields. The manual doesn't suggest anything different: `-u' `--unique' Normally, output only the first of a sequence of lines that compare equal. For the `--check' (`-c') option, check that no pair of consecutive lines compares equal. The lines clearly don't compare equal since without -u it reverses the order of the first three lines of input. Consequently, all three should be output with -u. The POSIX spec. seems to support the info documentation: http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/95399/utilities/sort.html At the very least this seems to be a documentation fix but I believe the behaviour is wrong. The impact of it can be serious, i.e. I'm in the middle of sorting a list of files to backup! ** Affects: coreutils (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- sort's -u is Failing to Check all -k fields for Uniqueness. https://launchpad.net/bugs/56891 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 56892] Wireless on MacBook not activated easily...
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6-686-smp I run Dapper (kernel 2.6.15-686-26) on a MacBook laptop with an Atheros- based wireless NIC for which the madwifi-ng kernel modules show up properly in lsmod -- all of them, so this is not the same as bug #46639. Problem is that the ath0 interface (in my case configured with WEP) is hard to activate. It isn't working after a reboot, even though the System-Administration-Networking menu says it is active (but no gateway shown). I have found the following convoluted way of making this work (works 100% of the time): 1. Still in the menu, first deactivate ath0, then activate it again; this will take quite a while, but then show ath0 as activated and as gateway. Quitting the menu and ping -c 4 www.yahoo.com shows that wireless is NOT in fact working. Now do 2. sudo ifup ath0, which after the second DHCP request brings up the interface. Doing it any other way, such as through repeated ifdown/ifup commands does not work. Although I have listed restricted-modules as the affected package, it may be a gnome-network-manager thing. [Bug 56894] WLAN disconnects repeatedly from AP when using WPA on a SMP machine
Public bug reported: I'm running current edgy eft on a Dell Inspiron 640m using the builtin intel WLAN chip driven by the ipw3945 driver. Everything seems to work just find, as long as I don't have heavy traffic (normal webserving and even downloading files works rather well). But as soon as I transfer bigger amounts of data (such as big file transfers on the LAN or watching recorded TV shows using myhtv) the network disconnects repeatedly in intervals from 10 seconds up to 5 minutes. It seems to depend on how much exactly is beeing transfered, when the connection is maxed out then I get a disconnect quite fast. Googling for this revealed the following blog entry which seems to describe the same issue: http://www.tuxyturvy.com/blog/index.php?/archives/23-Using-the-IPW3945-with-Linux,-WPA,-and-the-SMP-Kernel.html I've tried the hint suggested in there (setting maxcpus=1) and it does indeed fix the problem ('though it does disable the second core, obviously). The bug mentions the two mails from the ipw3945-devel mailing list which seem to contain a fix http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=29070112forum_id=47844 http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=28878717forum_id=47844 I've not tested these fixes, but the blog entry mentions that they fix the problem. As the fixes are not to the ip3945 driver, but to the ieee80211 subsystem the problem might as well occur with other drivers as well. ** Affects: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- WLAN disconnects repeatedly from AP when using WPA on a SMP machine https://launchpad.net/bugs/56894 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yes, you are right. Just remove the cdrom. remove all stuff from the sources.list file and just use the following 3 lines: deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted universe multiverse deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main restricted universe multiverse Then run sudo apt-get update and afterwards sudo apt-get -u dist- upgrade. You could get some errors during the upgrade - this is quite normal. Just rerun sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade several times. [Bug 54988] Re: Sound echoes, after upgrade.
I just tried the latest CD, (this time, NOT alternate). It does the same thing, even when running live! It stutters, almost like a record with a scratch. Sometimes it will skip a fragment of a second, sometimes it will repeat. MP3s work much better tham system sounds. System sounds can go on for up to five minutes. The computer hangs while the sound is playing, but works perfect afterwards. MP3s are absolutely hearable, but there is a skip around every minute or so. Annoying, but not cruel. It is still the same PC as mentioned i post #1. I hopeyou can fix this. It's only in UBUNTU. I haven't tried Kubuntu, Xubuntu and such. But others work fine. I will temporarily change distro until Ubuntu works again. I don't like that... :-( Maybe Kanotix will do the trick. But I don't understand what Ubuntu does wrong. The sound is definitely there, but it stutters. Such a weird problem, and without error messages.
