Just today (18 Sept/06) installed Edgy Knot 3, the same "soft lockup" message
on my AMD Opteron box, alternating between CPU#0 and CPU#1. Also, usplash
segfaults, and in fact there is no splash screen on boot or on shutdown/reboot;

GSM decoder in gstreamer but the wavparse element does not support this

Uhhh... ok, I was afraid my webcam is broken I can confirm, only a
grey picture in edgy.
Until edgy it stopped working, now I know the reason.
It's always frustrating if something worked in a previous Ubuntu version
and crushed in the new Ubuntu version. Even you can't Ubuntu blaim for
this.
To reopen this bug, I had to click on gnome-panel at the top; this was
not at all obvious. Grr.

I'd love to reopen it, but I don't see any handy "re-open" links, and I
don't know how to do that in this friendly system. As a simple matter
of fact, Sebastien is wrong-- I can create a folder named '.something'

Here's the log from the original partitioning. I have since resized the
swap to around 1 Gb (just to be on the safe side ...) and hibernating
now works, at least roughtly. (Just tested for the first time. The fan
kept on running until I gave up on waiting and rebooted -- but I
digress.)

created swap was even smaller than I remembered; just roughly equal to
the amount of RAM in the system (223MB RAM [sic], about 290MB swap)

Oh yes, there's also this bozotic locale bug from 6.06 which ends up
selecting "no particular locale but if you have to have one, let's just
say Australia". So /etc/apt/sources.list had the .au mirror (changed by
hand now that I noticed) and /etc/environment contains this:
