I am dual booting with windows, although I haven't used windows since
the change so it hasn't updated my clock.

Ok, I didn't realise that. Not sure if that is a good behaviour though,
because there must be plenty of people (like me) who have windows
installed but use Ubuntu as their primary OS?

Maybe a better solution would be to popup a dialog on login saying that a DST
has been detected, and present the user with two time options to choose from.
Wouldn't be hard with a bit of python, although I wouldn't know how to get it
to run only on certain dates.
Or would it make more sense to integrate it with the gnome-clock applet?

[Bug 63418] CPU soft lockup during bootup

2006-10-01 Thread Alexander Onic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

When booting the system in about 70% of the cases the system locks up
during the boot up splash screen.

If I switch to text console (F1) before the lockup occures it will show the
following:
[17179605.64] BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

No reaction after that. But as mentioned, there are chances that it
comes up just fine.

I'm using linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic (which is a dependency of
linux-686-smp). The lockup occured definitely with 2.6.17-8 and later.
2.6.17-7 seems to come up fine.

[Bug 63196] Re: Impossible to connect to a msn account

Changing the dbus file did solve the problem, and the cohoba-applet became very
very slow.
I don't have any output when I create or change anything with an msn account,
with or without the modification of the dbus file. I had output with google
talk account, but now I can't connect this :(
I'll try to reinstall all the packages to see if I can have more output.

[Bug 63427] Running bzflag results in xorg lockup/Xid

2006-10-01 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-legacy

Description of the problem:
The act of running BZflag seems to be able to trigger a bug in the
nvidia-glx-legacy driver for me. This problem seems to have gotten worse over
the years and is something that only nvidia can fix. This is just a place
holder for other people to find.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install nvidia-glx-legacy and ensure that composite is turned off so 3D
acceleration works.
2. Install bzflag .
3. Run bzflag then go to: Join Game - Start Server - Start .

Expected result:
Server to fail to start because bzflag-server is not installed. Failed (exit =
2). to be displayed.

Actual result:
Server fails to start because bzflag-server is not installed. Failed (exit =
2). is displayed. Keyboard stops responding and bzflag will chew up 98% of the
CPU until killed off at a virtual terminal. The following is printed in syslog:

[Bug 63429] [Edgy] qemu-make-debian-root hasn't worked since Debian Sarge, and not even then

2006-10-01 Thread Zed Lopez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu

 0.8.2-0ubuntu1 installs /usr/sbin/qemu-make-debian-root, a script to
debootstrap a working Debian system into a disk image that can be used
in qemu. It fails first because of a reference to libsigc++-1.2-5c102, a
package that existed in Debian Sarge, but not Debian Sid or Etch, let
alone Ubuntu Edgy.

The script includes this line:

debootstrap
--exclude=syslinux,at,exim,mailx,libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2,mbr,setserial,fdutils,info,ipchains,iptables,lilo,pcmcia-cs,ppp,pppoe,ppp
oeconf,pppconfig,wget,telnet,cron,logrotate,exim4,exim4-base,exim4-config,exim4-daemon-light,pciutils,modconf,tasksel
 --include=aptitude,libsigc++-1.2-5c102 $DISTRO /tmp/mount.$$ $URL

That causes this failure when trying to build sid, etch or edgy:

E: Couldn't find these debs: libsigc++-1.2-5c102

I tried removing the --exclude and --include parameters from the
debootstrap, and also a subsequent dpkg-remove line that also caused
dependency problems. Then, with this invocation:

sudo qemu-make-debian-root 200 edgy http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
edgy

the debootstrap looked good, but the script concluded thus:

I: Configuring pcmciautils...
I: Configuring console-setup...
I: Configuring console-tools...
I: Configuring ubuntu-minimal...

Done.

--
It did result in a file called edgy, but trying to use that in qemu resulted in
qemu hanging after saying Booting from Hard Disk...

Making a Debian Sid image (with an unmodified qemu-make-debian-root)
resulted in the same messages and result.

Finally, the script is written to create only the root user, and assigns
the password 'root', i.e., it results in an installation unlike any
conventional Ubuntu installation (though one could get the same results
with debootstrap.) Perhaps an appropriate Ubuntuization would be to
prompt for a login name and password, and to create an ordinary user in
sudoers.

[Bug 59429] Re: Multimedia key partially working

I had the same problem and find this workaround (with Google help...) by

in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/inet, logitech_base section :

example :

partial hidden alphanumeric_keys

key I01 { [ XF86AudioMedia ] };
key I02 { [ XF86WWW ] };
key I10 { [ XF86AudioPrev ] };

key I22 { [ XF86AudioPlay, XF86AudioPause ] };
key I24 { [ XF86AudioStop ] };
key I2E { [ XF86AudioLowerVolume ] };

key I30 { [ XF86AudioRaiseVolume ] };
key I32 { [ XF86HomePage ] };
key I3B { [ XF86New ] };

[Bug 63430] Re: Saving Streams using Kaffeine causes crash

2006-10-01 Thread Peter
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: kaffeine

  I am using the latest beta of edgy 6.10 32bit and have Kaffeine and the
  firefox plugin installed. I can play video clips and sound perfectly
  (For example from www.bbc.co.uk/news).

  When I right click and choose 'save stream' the file selector box is
  shown and I select where to save the file. Upon clicking 'save' I get
  two xine errors:

  Requested resource does not exist

(mms://wm.bbc.co.uk/news/media/avdb/news_web/video/9012da6800534e0/bb/09012da680053561_16x9_bb.wmv#save:/09012da680053561_16x9_bb.wmv)

  and:

  Security Warning:
  Security message: The specified save_dir might be a security risk.

  I have tried this as well on the Apple movie trailers site and get the
  same errors.

+ I have also installed Konqueror, and again it plays perfectly, but this
+ time Konqueror crashes out as soon as you hit 'save stream'. By the way
+ why is there no imbedded player for firefox from Kaffeine?
+
  Thanks

[Bug 63265] Re: Firefox fails to open in Ubuntu 6.0.6 LTS

2006-10-01 Thread JohnL
There is no open instance of Firefox showing in the System Monitor.

I have downloaded and installed epiphany and that works fine so there
doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the network settings. I'm using
Bpalogin - downloaded from Ubuntu via Synaptic.

[Bug 63432] Unable to open mms streams

2006-10-01 Thread Gavin Hamill
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

Just installed edgy nightly snapshot 20061001 on a blank Thinkpad T30.
Looking good :)

However, even after installing gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10
-plugins-ugly when I try to open any mms:// URL either in Totem File -
Open Location, or as an embedded video in Firefox, I am told:

No URI handler implemented for mms.

How do I resolve this without resorting to xine/mplayer, etc. ?

I have installed nothing else on this laptop - and have no 3rd party
repos in sources.list

[Bug 63433] 6.10 beta installer does not see hde, hdf

2006-10-01 Thread n7cee
Public bug reported:

When installing Kubuntu 6.10 beta and attempting to manually partition
so I can install to hde5, the partitioner doesn't see hde or hdf, just
hda and hdb. There are four IDE hard drives on the system (hdc is the
dvd-rw). When I'm booted with the live CD, I can see all five drives
