[Bug 85722] Many Users Do Not Understand What Directories are For

2007-02-17 Thread wersdaluv
Public bug reported:

Many users, especially the new ones, are having a hard time
understanding what directories in the File System are for.

In Windows, you can see there My Documents, Control Panel, and all
that. Many easily understood what those things meant.

In Linux, whenever one opens the File Browser one sees directories like
bin, boot, dev, and so on. Many could not easily guess what those words
mean after searching the internet on what those directories are for.
Since many Windows migrants did not have any experience with Linux
before, it would not still be easy for them to interpret what binary
means even if I know that it is what bin actually stand for. That goes
for many other directories like etc and even more for their sub-
directories.

I suggest an accessible description of directories. Maybe, something
like having aliases and extra descriptions for the directories or
something like that whenever File Browsers are opened.

[Bug 60764] Re: Large file transfer gives error: Corrupted MAC on input

2007-02-17 Thread Mika Fischer
Very good idea!

As it turns out you're right. The same thing happens with netcat. Also
only when the broken computer acts as server. The other way round works
fine...

05fab97be7fd5e7c9229187c24c89ea0 test.bin.orig
05fab97be7fd5e7c9229187c24c89ea0 test.bin.m2s
7dcb7bef6d1af049bd63fcf6d180685e test.bin.s2m

I guess I'll just get a new NIC and see if this helps...

Any idea what else could be the cause of this?

And thanks a lot for helping me debug this!

[Bug 85724] Absence of GUI Command-line Code Reference on Terminal Emulators

2007-02-17 Thread wersdaluv
Public bug reported:

I believe that many experienced Linux Users still keep accessible
references on Command-line Codes. I also believe that they are not the
only ones who need those. New users need them so much more but many of
them do not manage to do so. I am not sure but I think, the man code
lists references, but I still believe that a GUI reference will work
better.

Whenever a new user opens a Command-line Emulator, he/she will likely be
shocked because of lack of knowledge with what to do with the Command-
line. A resourceful user will search the Internet on how the Command-
line works while other users could just panic or end up whining in the
forums.

I suggest a GUI Command-line Reference on Terminal Emulators which will
ask the users what they want to do and will show them the codes they
need to do the job. For example, there would be a Navigating the
Terminal option and will list the codes necessary for a user to
navigate the terminal.

[Bug 85725] Add a setting to hide the launchpad menu items

2007-02-17 Thread Vincent Untz

Binary package hint: liblaunchpad-integration0

It's good to have launchpad integration, but some people might want to
hide them (for example, when they want to show an upstream desktop, or
if they disagree with the use of launchpad for some reason).

There should be a global gconf key that this lib would look at to know
whether the menu items should be added or not.

[Bug 23203] Re: cdrecord maps bus, target, lun to /dev/sgX imperfectly

2007-02-17 Thread wilko
I fixed this on my system by adding a udev rule. You could simply add
the necessary line in 40-permissions.rules but if there is an update to
udev it will get overwritten and you'll be back where you started. So I
created a new rule and called it 15-local.rules and put the following
lines in the file:

# SCSI devices
BUS==scsi, KERNEL==sg[0-9], NAME=%k, GROUP=cdrom

Restart the system and in terminal run cdrecord -scanbus. You should
no longer see the lineError trying to open /dev/sg0 exclusively
(Permission denied).

is there anyway that I can compile the nvidia drivers at boot up? (i
have the Nvidia driver/shell install script that always usually works).
I know that I can get terminal access (rescue mode), but the header
libraries etc, for compiling nvidia driver don't seem accessible at boot
time. can I get around this somehow?

the other file that i have is a bios upgrade from the manufacturer, but am
unsure (and very reluctant) as to how to update. Is there a set of linux

Thanks for the report. It seems like the __module__ attribute has been
removed in Python 2.5. So I need to find a portable way to do this for
both 2.4 and 2.5, or stop supporting python 2.4.

[Bug 24280] Re: locally installed gtk themes not applied to admin apps

2007-02-17 Thread perriman
I think when you launch an application with gksu, it be save the actual
user session environment .

for example, when you execute su user you change the user but all
session environment don't change and when you execute su - user then
the session environment change to the user logged.

I think that if you launch some application with gksu it may use the
user theme and gksu - the root theme.

Chuchi

[Bug 85722] Re: Many Users Do Not Understand What Directories are For

2007-02-17 Thread Tahir Emre KALAYCI
Hello,

I believe this is a wish from linux community. There are many resources
on the internet to help beginners. Searching google using linux for
beginners brings approximately 1M results. With enough english anybody
can learn using this resources.

I also suggest you to read
http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/linux/usersguide/linux_ugfilestruct.html
to learn more about linux directory structure. I believe with good
search parameters, google and other web sites bring enough information.
This is how, many users learn to do things in Linux. With the help of
web community.

You can also check 2 sites below:
http://www.ubuntu.com/community
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy

And don't forget, you must join linux user communities (especially
specific ones for your native language and distribution) to ask
questions and find solutions to your problems. Most linux users eager to
help.

[Bug 85734] wrong fontviewer is used by default

KFontview is installed because Konqueror or some other KDE apps depend on it.
When in Gnome, the default font viewer is set to KFontview for some reason if

KFontview should not be the default app when Opening a font file.

[Bug 22985] Re: [x700] fails to infer lvds for primary connector on acer ferrari 4005 | card detected, but driver fails to use right output port

2007-02-17 Thread Tormod Volden
The patch 7409 from upstream fixes the issue for my laptop, when using
the latest git version. Now I ported the patch (the best I could) to the
Edgy version, and it still works. Currently, the Edgy and Feisty
versions are almost the same, so I expect this patch to work in Feisty
as well.

However, upstream is not totally happy about their patch, as it is kind
of a workaround and not fixing the real issue at its origin.

[Bug 85738] kernel panic when loading ethernet driver

2007-02-17 Thread Mathias Kende
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I've got a P5B motherboard with a Core 2 Duo E6600 processor running Edgy Eft
AMD64 (with all updates done).
The card has a Realtek RTL 8168/8111 Ethernet Network Adaptater, and I'm using
SATA hard drives on the Intel ICH8 controller (I'm not using the JMicron's
one). I'm using the normal generic kernel 2.6.17-11 (but the bug was already
there with the 2.6.17-10 kernel). The only modification that I've done is
installing the nvidia driver from their website, but I think it is not loaded
when my bug happens.

From times to times I'm experiencing a Kernel Panic. I've checked my RAM
with memtest without problem. Here is the Kernel output (I've copied a
part of it as I've got no camera, and no log is written to the disk) :

... stands for hexadecimal output that I assume being of no interest.

Realtek RTL 8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Network Adaptater
Driver version: 1.02
Release date: 2006/02/23
I/O Base: 0xB800 (I/O port)
IRQ: 177

Then there is the initialisation of the SD drives (I suppose that it is
my hard drives), and then :

skb_over_panic: text: fff... len: -4 put: -4 head: ff... data: ff... tail:
ff... end: ff... dev: eth0

Rip: 0010:[...] ... {skb_over_panic+92}

Then there is the machine state, I'm not sure that it is useful except for the

0 Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!

If there is not enough information let me now and i'll try to find a
camera or something.

I've got the impression that the bug appen when the eth0 driver is
loaded before the SD drives, but I'm not sure that it is the real
reason. The interesting point is that when this bug happens, if I just
reboot the computer by pressing the reboot button, the bug re-happens
nearly always. I need to completely shut it down for a while before
rebooting it, in order for the system to boot properly. So I suppose
that it is maybe one of the component (the Ethernet adaptater I suppose)
that is left in an improper state and that is causing the problem.

[Bug 61463] Re: Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink

2007-02-17 Thread LionsPhil
More importantly, just don't use it [Edgy], then is /not/ a solution
to it [Edgy] is broken. It rates up there with you have a compiler
for unhelpfully condescending open-source brush-offs.

One of the very problems with this bug is that it's a reason for people
to just not use it, and switch distros! (Dapper is not a viable
alternative because LTS apparently means we'll stop updating it when
Edgy comes out.)

[Bug 80949] Re: firefox crash segfault (core dumped) with some websites

2007-02-17 Thread Kurt J. Bosch
The problem seems to be related to libflash-mozplugin
*not* flashplugin-nonfree.

What I did to reproduce:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree/edgy-backports
Result: firefox worked without problem three times

sudo apt-get install libflash-mozplugin
Result: firefox worked without problem three times

sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
Result: firefox is crashing each time

sudo apt-get remove libflash-mozplugin

Result: firefox worked without problem three times
 (but without flash)

Some Notes:
I started firefox using path /usr/lib/firefox/firefox
this time, because my symlink /usr/bin/firefox is diverted.
I restored /etc/firefox/firefoxrc to normal.
I used an extra user account (unchanged) with gnome for testing.

Problem appears with webpage

[Bug 85673] Re: Choice Not Microsoft

2007-02-17 Thread Colin Watson
It's fine to remove ubuntu-desktop if you don't plan to use the default
selection of software we recommend. The downside is that upgrades are
less well-tested without it, and if and when you upgrade to the next
version of Ubuntu then you may find that new features don't get
installed automatically (this is because we now assume that you're
taking control of your software selection and probably want to make this
choice yourself), and the Canonical support department only accept bugs
on an Ubuntu desktop system if you have the whole thing installed just
to cut down on the sheer number of permutations they have to be trained
on. Aside from that there's nothing preventing you from removing
components of the operating system if you like. With the exception that
you need to take more control during upgrades, the operating system is
entirely functional without ubuntu-desktop.

As far as the details of your removal list go, the worst of this is
because 'totem*' doesn't mean what you think (it's a regex matching any
package name with 'tote' somewhere in the middle of it immediately
followed by zero or more 'm's) and this also removes libtotem-plparser1
which gedit et al need. I'd suggest removing packages individually
rather than using regex removals if you want to have minimal impact. You
claimed that binutils was being removed along with ubuntu-desktop, but
this isn't true - your log shows that binutils-static was being removed,
which is quite different, as this is a package containing the ld tool
used for linux-restricted-modules. If you aren't using the restricted
modules then there's no harm in removing this.

Operator (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/4106/). This started
happening after I had to manually remove the ColorZilla extension which
causes Firefox to silently SEGFAULT in Ubuntu (bug #81964). Initially,
even updating didn't work, but today I managed to update a few
extensions. Then I installed ColorZilla 1.0, and was aftrerwards forced
to remove it again (got a SEGFAULT). Now again, I cannot install anymore
extensions, getting the same error instead.

[Bug 85746] feisty kubuntu installer - X started but nothing shown

2007-02-17 Thread Marcin Białoń
Public bug reported:

I chose smaller resolution than maximum (1024x768 rather than 1280x1024)
at LiveCD boot screen. X autoconfiguration chose 1280x1024 as my base
resolution. X started but nothing shown. I edited xorg.conf and changed
resolution to 1024x768. After X restart everything works fine.

[Bug 61463] Re: Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink

2007-02-17 Thread Martin Buchholz
The curious thing here is that with regard to the
problematic behavior of the echo command, that
dash cannot claim to be taking the moral high ground here,
since dash's builtin echo is also not Unix-2003-compliant.

According to
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/echo.html
Implementations shall not support any options.
but dash's echo supports the (historic BSD) -n option.

There are no Unix 2003 compliant echo commands in
common use!

As that same page says,
The two different historical versions of echo vary in fatally incompatible
ways.

Note also how surprising it is to users that the standard shell's
builtin echo is not compatible with the standard /bin/echo.
The whole point of having the shell providing a builtin
command is to provide a *completely* compatible, but higher performing,
replacement for the standard standalone command.
Since dash's echo is incompatible with GNU echo, dash is
not suitable for use as a standard system shell.
(Perhaps dash originated on a system where its builtin
echo was compatible with that system's /bin/echo?)

If Ubuntu persists in its present course of using dash as /bin/sh,
there will be no way to have future reliable Ubuntu LTS
versions, since dashisms will creep in. Users will
merely have the choice of different sets of bugs, depending on
whether they choose /bin/sh to point to /bin/bash or /bin/dash.

[Bug 85748] No support for SMAPI battery

2007-02-17 Thread Benjamin Delagoutte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Module tp_smapi is not available anymore in Feisty, although it was in
Edgy kernel, resulting in a lack of functionnality for all IBM/Lenovo
Thinkpad owners.

The tp_smapi kernel module exposes some features of the IBM/Lenovo
ThinkPad hardware/firmware via a sysfs interface. Currently, the main
implemented functionality is control of battery charging and extended
battery status. The underlying hardware interfaces are SMAPI and direct
access to the embedded controller.

See http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Tp_smapi for further

Fonctionnality could alternatively be provided by thinkpad-source, but
this module can't be compiled with module-assistant.

[Bug 85755] Flash 9 doesn't support oss natively Need work arround for LTSP and nx

2007-02-17 Thread AaronPeterson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

I tried something from adobe-labs and have no way to verify that it's
working (until next week)

(all of my computers support alsa just fine, and I tried to force
artsdsp and esd, but couldn't know for sure)

I compiled it per these instructions at
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flash_Player:Additional_Interface_Support_for_Linux

I removed the unicode support link line (-licuuc) because it caused it
not to compile, and installed linux-headers (actually were already
installed) and libssl-dev (not openssl-dev) .. basically did this:

 cc -shared -O2 -Wall -Werror -lssl flashsupport.c -o libflashsupport.so
ldd libflashplayer.so (it didn't find it)
 sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib

I then had to make a copy of /usr/bin/firefox and hack in an artsdsp
line to force it to use that... to test the oss support.. however, I
then removed that .so file, and restarted firefox and it still worked
with artsdsp in that file, so that's why I can't test this..

Unless somebody knows how to force alsa to only accept one audio
connection...

[Bug 85758] qtparted crashes during installation to HD

2007-02-17 Thread hal2k1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qtparted

I am using the install CD for Kubuntu Feisty Fawn Herd 4. During
installation, I select manual partition of the hard disk so that I can
manually specify which partition on which to install Kubuntu.

In /var/log/syslog the relevant reports from ubiquity read as follows:

Feb 17 11:14:10 ubuntu kernel: [ 673.14] NTFS volume version 3.1.
Feb 17 11:14:10 ubuntu partman: Partition /dev/hda5 does not contain Windows

configdb targetdb -p ^console-setup/ --config=Name:targetdb
--config=Driver:File --config=Filename:/target/var/cache/debconf/config.dat

If I run qtparted separately, it crashes too.

I suspect it is something to do with proper ntfs support missing from
the kernel of the installation CD.

2007-02-17 Thread Ilmari Vacklin
Public bug reported:

The notification bubbles take the font colour from Gtk's colour settings
(which are changeable with the new gnome theme manager), but the
background colour seems to always be a yellow-beigeish colour. If the
font colour isn't dark, the text is naturally very hard to read.
Attaching example screenshot.

I hope these bubbles are actually created by libnotify. :)

** Affects: libnotify (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
