[Bug 85722] Many Users Do Not Understand What Directories are For
Public bug reported: Many users, especially the new ones, are having a hard time understanding what directories in the File System are for. In Windows, you can see there My Documents, Control Panel, and all that. Many easily understood what those things meant. In Linux, whenever one opens the File Browser one sees directories like bin, boot, dev, and so on. Many could not easily guess what those words mean after searching the internet on what those directories are for. Since many Windows migrants did not have any experience with Linux before, it would not still be easy for them to interpret what binary means even if I know that it is what bin actually stand for. That goes for many other directories like etc and even more for their sub- directories. I suggest an accessible description of directories. Maybe, something like having aliases and extra descriptions for the directories or something like that whenever File Browsers are opened. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Many Users Do Not Understand What Directories are For https://launchpad.net/bugs/85722 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 60764] Re: Large file transfer gives error: Corrupted MAC on input
Very good idea! As it turns out you're right. The same thing happens with netcat. Also only when the broken computer acts as server. [Bug 85724] Absence of GUI Command-line Code Reference on Terminal Emulators
Public bug reported: I believe that many experienced Linux Users still keep accessible references on Command-line Codes. I also believe that they are not the only ones who need those. New users need them so much more but many of them do not manage to do so. I am not sure but I think, the man code lists references, but I still believe that a GUI reference will work better. Whenever a new user opens a Command-line Emulator, he/she will likely be shocked because of lack of knowledge with what to do with the Command- line. A resourceful user will search the Internet on how the Command- line works while other users could just panic or end up whining in the forums. I suggest a GUI Command-line Reference on Terminal Emulators which will ask the users what they want to do and will show them the codes they need to do the job. For example, there would be a Navigating the Terminal option and will list the codes necessary for a user to navigate the terminal. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Absence of GUI Command-line Code Reference on Terminal Emulators https://launchpad.net/bugs/85724 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 23203] Re: cdrecord maps bus, target, lun to /dev/sgX imperfectly
I fixed this on my system by adding a udev rule. You could simply add the necessary line in 40-permissions.rules but if there is an update to udev it will get overwritten and you'll be back where you started. So I created a new rule and called it 15-local.rules and put the following lines in the file: # SCSI devices BUS==scsi, KERNEL==sg[0-9], NAME=%k, GROUP=cdrom Restart the system and in terminal run cdrecord -scanbus. [Bug 22985] Re: [x700] fails to infer lvds for primary connector on acer ferrari 4005 | card detected, but driver fails to use right output port
The patch 7409 from upstream fixes the issue for my laptop, when using the latest git version. Now I ported the patch (the best I could) to the Edgy version, and it still works. Currently, the Edgy and Feisty versions are almost the same, so I expect this patch to work in Feisty as well. [Bug 85738] kernel panic when loading ethernet driver
Public bug reported: Hello, I've got a P5B motherboard with a Core 2 Duo E6600 processor running Edgy Eft AMD64 (with all updates done). The card has a Realtek RTL 8168/8111 Ethernet Network Adaptater, and I'm using SATA hard drives on the Intel ICH8 controller (I'm not using the JMicron's one). I'm using the normal generic kernel 2.6.17-11 (but the bug was already there with the 2.6.17-10 kernel). The only modification that I've done is installing the nvidia driver from their website, but I think it is not loaded when my bug happens. From times to times I'm experiencing a Kernel Panic. I've checked my RAM with memtest without problem. Here is the Kernel output (I've copied a part of it as I've got no camera, and no log is written to the disk) : ... stands for hexadecimal output that I assume being of no interest. Realtek RTL 8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Network Adaptater Driver version: 1.02 Release date: 2006/02/23 I/O Base: 0xB800 (I/O port) IRQ: 177 Then there is the initialisation of the SD drives (I suppose that it is my hard drives), and then : skb_over_panic: text: fff... len: -4 put: -4 head: ff... data: ff... tail: ff... end: ff... dev: eth0 --[cut here]--[please bite here]-- Kernel BUG at net/core/skbuff.c:94 invalid opcode: [1] SMP CPU 0 Module linked in: [here lie a long list of module, I suppose it's juste the default ones as I have not touched to my kernel]] Pid: 4056, comm: ifconfig Not tainted 2.6.17-11-generic #2 Rip: 0010:[...] ... {skb_over_panic+92} Then there is the machine state, I'm not sure that it is useful except for the call trace, I'm listing only the function name and not the hexadecimal adress : Call trace: IRQ {r1000:r1000_interupt+459} handle_IRQ_event+44 __do_IRQ+188 __do_IRQ+66 ret_from_intr+0 EOI cache_grow+779 kmem_cahce_alloc+131 __alloc_skb+75 r1000:r1000_open+436 dev_open+47 dev_change_flags+104 devinet_ioctl+741 sock_ioctl+540 do_ioctl+47 vfs_ioctl+659 sys_ioctl+108 system_call+126 Code ... I've got the impression that the bug appen when the eth0 driver is loaded before the SD drives, but I'm not sure that it is the real reason. The interesting point is that when this bug happens, if I just reboot the computer by pressing the reboot button, the bug re-happens nearly always. I need to completely shut it down for a while before rebooting it, in order for the system to boot properly. So I suppose that it is maybe one of the component (the Ethernet adaptater I suppose) that is left in an improper state and that is causing the problem. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- kernel panic when loading ethernet driver https://launchpad.net/bugs/85738 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 85673] Re: Choice Not Microsoft
It's fine to remove ubuntu-desktop if you don't plan to use the default selection of software we recommend. The downside is that upgrades are less well-tested without it, and if and when you upgrade to the next version of Ubuntu then you may find that new features don't get installed automatically (this is because we now assume that you're taking control of your software selection and probably want to make this choice yourself), and the Canonical support department only accept bugs on an Ubuntu desktop system if you have the whole thing installed just to cut down on the sheer number of permutations they have to be trained on. Aside from that there's nothing preventing you from removing components of the operating system if you like. With the exception that you need to take more control during upgrades, the operating system is entirely functional without ubuntu-desktop. As far as the details of your removal list go, the worst of this is because 'totem*' doesn't mean what you think (it's a regex matching any package name with 'tote' somewhere in the middle of it immediately followed by zero or more 'm's) and this also removes libtotem-plparser1 which gedit et al need. I'd suggest removing packages individually rather than using regex removals if you want to have minimal impact. You claimed that binutils was being removed along with ubuntu-desktop, but this isn't true - your log shows that binutils-static was being removed, which is quite different, as this is a package containing the ld tool used for linux-restricted-modules. If you aren't using the restricted modules then there's no harm in removing this. ** Changed in: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Status: Needs Info = Rejected -- Choice Not Microsoft https://launchpad.net/bugs/85673 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 61463] Re: Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink
The curious thing here is that with regard to the problematic behavior of the echo command, that dash cannot claim to be taking the moral high ground here, since dash's builtin echo is also not Unix-2003-compliant. According to http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/echo.html Implementations shall not support any options. but dash's echo supports the (historic BSD) -n option. There are no Unix 2003 compliant echo commands in common use! As that same page says, The two different historical versions of echo vary in fatally incompatible ways. Note also how surprising it is to users that the standard shell's builtin echo is not compatible with the standard /bin/echo. The whole point of having the shell providing a builtin command is to provide a *completely* compatible, but higher performing, replacement for the standard standalone command. Since dash's echo is incompatible with GNU echo, dash is not suitable for use as a standard system shell. (Perhaps dash originated on a system where its builtin echo was compatible with that system's /bin/echo?) If Ubuntu persists in its present course of using dash as /bin/sh, there will be no way to have future reliable Ubuntu LTS versions, since dashisms will creep in. Users will merely have the choice of different sets of bugs, depending on whether they choose /bin/sh to point to /bin/bash or /bin/dash. -- Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink https://launchpad.net/bugs/61463 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 85755] Flash 9 doesn't support oss natively Need work arround for LTSP and nx
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree I tried something from adobe-labs and have no way to verify that it's working (until next week) (all of my computers support alsa just fine, and I tried to force artsdsp and esd, but couldn't know for sure) I compiled it per these instructions at http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flash_Player:Additional_Interface_Support_for_Linux I removed the unicode support link line (-licuuc) because it caused it not to compile, and installed linux-headers (actually were already installed) and libssl-dev (not openssl-dev) .. basically did this: cc -shared -O2 -Wall -Werror -lssl flashsupport.c -o libflashsupport.so ldd libflashplayer.so (it didn't find it) sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib I then had to make a copy of /usr/bin/firefox and hack in an artsdsp line to force it to use that... to test the oss support.. however, I then removed that .so file, and restarted firefox and it still worked with artsdsp in that file, so that's why I can't test this.. Unless somebody knows how to force alsa to only accept one audio connection... ** Affects: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Flash 9 doesn't support oss natively Need work arround for LTSP and nx https://launchpad.net/bugs/85755 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 85756] Lost all messages of a folder while moving them to another one
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I am using a disconnected imap account in evolution in feisty. I had two folder with the same purpose, so I selected all messages of one folder in the message list, and dragged them over the other folder. They disappeared from the first folder. Then I deleted the other folder. [Bug 85758] qtparted crashes during installation to HD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: qtparted I am using the install CD for Kubuntu Feisty Fawn Herd 4. During installation, I select manual partition of the hard disk so that I can manually specify which partition on which to install Kubuntu. In /var/log/syslog the relevant reports from ubiquity read as follows: Feb 17 11:14:10 ubuntu kernel: [ 673.14] NTFS volume version 3.1. [Bug 85760] Doesn't take the background colour from gtk's colours
