[Bug 145112] Re: Random NVidia Proprietary Driver Lock-Ups with dual core + 7300

2007-11-19 Thread lanzen
No lockups since yesterday. It seems that NVIDIA-
Linux-x86-169.04-pkg1.run is solving this issue.

As for what Alvarez asked, I'm afraid you'll have to manual install.
Reports say that also 100.14.09 works, but that would be downgrading.

[Bug 163654] Re: Tracker search not showing indexed files

2007-11-19 Thread Jamie McCracken
Its mostly the case of tracker not exiting cleanly which is now fixed in
svn and soon to be released 0.6.4 version

in svn we know check for corruption and inconsistencies in the db and
index on startup if it was not previously shut down cleanly. If it cant
be repaired we force a reindex automatically so in the future you should
never have to go through this.

Looks better, but:

- you should list all changes that you carry over from previous ubuntu versions
- your changelog looks wrong as only the last ubuntu version is showing. Where
are all the previous ubuntu changes?

As a reference, have a look at how the changelog of 0.9-3ubuntu1 has
been done.

Re: [Bug 147464] Re: Heavy network activity (eg: torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2007-11-19 Thread hyperair
Fascinating. So these kernel freezes are actually caused by the kernel
entering an infinite loop? We should also check with other distros to
see if the problem occurs with them. I know that none of the Ubuntu
users I know personally seem to have the problem though. Including me.

thechef wrote:
I had a full system freeze (can't use mouse, keys, no network response /
pong) on 2.6.23 and 2.6.22.10 when I was transferring data. The freeze only
occured after a few days of runtime and only when transferring data. Not sure
if it was always from or to NFS drives, but there were always NFS drives
mounted. The last time it crashed was when I was transferring about 70 GB
over the network from an NFS drive to another NFS drive. As I really have
difficulty to reproduce this problem I ask if anyone has a system on which it
is easier to reproduce this(assuming that there is only one error) problem.
Can you test the newest kernel versions?

 =2.6.23.8

Is it possible that an error such as this, can cause the problem? It's just
the one that looks most likely related, but I don't know what happens to a
infinite loop under the big kernel lock and how probable it is, under the
known conditions, that the kernel enters this infinite loop. (I'm not a
 kernel programmer after all)

[Bug 163874] Ubuntu ISO CD loads, no mouse action

2007-11-19 Thread Mark G. Forbes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bootcd

Ubuntu Live CD, version 7.04, build 20070415
HP Pavilion 6640C, AMD K6-500, 512MB, 20GB drive, Techmedia PS/2 mouse, Dell
1280x1024x24 CRT

Insert CD, boot using Start or Install Ubuntu
Much computer mysteriosity for several minutes, then desktop appears.
Moving mouse does nothing. Can't click, can't move the cursor.
Give up, cycle power. Restart using Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode.
Same behavior...minutes of moving orange bar, then text, then desktop. No
movement of cursor.

Same system previously worked using Puppy Linux live CD, minutes earlier.
Hard disk is clean except for a basic MS-DOS 6.22 boot loader and Command.
Works fine when Puppy Linux live CD reinserted...so it's not broken hardware.

Only button that works or causes a reaction is the standby button on the
keyboard, which produces an error box in the lower right corner informing
me that the attempt to standby failed, and I should RTFM.

Ran the integrity check on the CD and it passed. No other settings apparent
to try from the boot screen. Out of ideas, time to complain.

Re: [Bug 107320] Re: Large font in the GDM login text field after installing xserver-xorg-video-intel which report monitor having 289x21 millimiters

2007-11-19 Thread puccha
Matthew Nuzum schreef:
The Option DDC no workaround fixes the problem for me, but I'm
curious if anyone can explain what this does?

(quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_Data_Channel)

The Display Data Channel or DDC is a digital connection between a
computer display and a graphics adapter that allows the display to
communicate its specifications to the adapter. The standard was created
by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA).

What in my opinion happens is that either:
- your monitor reports the wrong physical dimensions
- your graphics driver doens't interpret the DDC information correctly.

My guess it is the latter happens as switching to another driver also
fixes the problem for me (i810, although I think that driver has no 3D
hardware capabilities). But maybe the i810 driver is simply incapable of
reading DDC and therefor the error doesn't occur (ergo: it's your
monitor hardware's fault)?

Anyway, by telling xorg not to use the DDC information it probably
assumes some default dimensions of your hardware which are more accurate
than what DDC reports.

//puccha

BTW: This workaround not only fixed problems with the login screen, gdm
for me but also:

mythtv (video and live tv where squized)
compiz-fusion (would boot up with HUGE titlebars)
teamspeak (menu scaling was incorrect to the point it was unuseable.)

Anyway I was tired to remove and reinsert the kernel module for rt61, so I

Re: [Bug 117773] Re: Regression: Kernel 2.6.20-16 breaks Smart-battery ACPI support

2007-11-19 Thread ooops
That's okay because it is not a module:

/boot$ grep ACPI_EC config-2.6.22-14-generic
CONFIG_ACPI_EC=y

Here is the dmesg how ec/sbs show up in the new kernel:

[8.069115] ACPI: EC: Look up EC in DSDT
[8.070816] ACPI: EC: GPE=0x1d, ports=0x66, 0x62
[ 24.832000] ACPI: Smart Battery System [SBS0]: AC Adapter [AC0] (on-line)
[ 25.544000] ACPI: Smart Battery System [SBS0]: Battery Slot [BAT0]
(battery present)

Your problem is definitely a different story than this bug. Create a new
bug-report, attach the respective output and hope someone finds time to
look at it. Alternatively test with the latest vanilla kernel and report
problems directly to the ACPI people.

[Bug 160427] Re: Compaq 6720s laptop can't install Ubuntu (crash during setup)

2007-11-19 Thread Kent
Hm, it crashes before I'm able to install anything. Both the text mode
install on the alternate CD and the normal install process. Any ideas on
how to obtain the lspci then? (I'm not an experienced Linux user) If it
works during a normal installation for you, and not for me, something
must be different. I guess lspci would be good to have. All ideas are
welcome.

[Bug 129920] Re: /var/lock/apache2 has wrong owner and group for webdav

2007-11-19 Thread Mathias Gug
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: apache2.2-common

  I'm running apache2.2 (package apache2.2-common 2.2.3-3.2build1) as a
  webdav server on feisty (amd64).

  According to the apache documentation,
  http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_dav_fs.html, the directory
containing the lock database must be readable and writable for the user
and group under which apache is running, i.e. www-data.

The lock database is by default set to
  DAVLockDB /var/lock/apache2/DAVLock
  in
  /etc/apache2/mods-available/dav_fs.conf

  $ mount | grep lock
varlock on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=1777)

This is am ramdisk, right? So /var/lock/apache2 is created at every time the
machine boots by /etc/init.d/apache2, the owner and group are set to root.
  line 97:[ -d /var/lock/apache2 ] || mkdir -p /var/lock/apache2

This ownership prevents apache from accessing the lock database, write
access to the dav enabled folders is impossible.

I have changed the line above in /etc/init.d/apache2 to
  97:[ -d /var/lock/apache2 ] || { mkdir -p /var/lock/apache2;
chown www-data:www-data /var/lock/apache2; }

Is it a good idea to fix it like this?

  Thanks, Christian

[Bug 150592] Re: No Sound with RealTek HD Audio on Asus A7T (Alc882)

2007-11-19 Thread Sam Lesher
I have an Asus A7T as well, with ath ALC882 audio codec. I was able to
fix my sound issue using the alsa-base package installed by default
(version 1.0.14-1ubuntu2 at the time of this writing). Here are the
steps:

A. Create a new file called “/etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.modprobe”:
$ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.modprobe

Add the following line to the file and then save it:
options snd-hda-intel model=w2jc

B. Edit the file “/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base”:
$ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Add the same line to the end of this file and then save it:
options snd-hda-intel model=w2jc

C. Reboot. After I rebooted, I had sound.

Yes it happens with every PDF. When I print to a PDF file I receive the
following error when opening the file: The filename output.pdf

this file, the file might present a security risk to your system. When I

Thanks.

[Bug 157730] Re: No sound at all after Gutsy upgrade

2007-11-19 Thread Tim Gardner
I have an XPS-410. Gutsy sound works out of the box (without linux-
backports-modules). Make sure your outputs are not muted. I use gnome-
alsamixer since it clearly labels muted channels. Note that I only
tested using the front microphone jack since the rear speaker jack is a
real PITA for me to get to.

I agree with the posters who mention that if the good old method of

just upgraded my machine and had the same error. I too have been
upgrading for several versions now.

[Bug 149573] Re: gutsy live CD hangs during boot on compaq presario V3417LA

2007-11-19 Thread rodrigo
HI, I believe this problem is not in Ubuntu, but in a common part of
most of all recent dist (kernel?). I had feisty 32 bits installed in my
HP Pavilion dv6215us, AMD Turion 64, and it worked fine. Now I decide to
try other dists (just for fun) and had similar problems in Fedora 8,
Mandriva 2008 and Opensuse 10.3, as also in Gutsy (all 32 bits).
Searching internet, its possible to find users from these distos
reporting boot problems like in previous version I could, but now I
cant That`s why I believe the problem is not in Ubuntu... Is it
possible to track kernel modifications from previous versions?

[Bug 113976] Re: PPKLite plugin is unable to initialize under AMD64

2007-11-19 Thread Wolfgang Glas
FYI, Medibuntu's acroread_8.1.1-0medibuntu3 package does solve this
problem for me under gutsy.

Most likely, this is a problem of all acroread-7.0.x packages published
for ubuntu.

Since there seems to be no volunteer stepping up, which tries to find
out, whether this adobe's problem or a problem of the 32bit-libraries
provided by ubuntu, this problem will most likely never be solved for
acroread-7.0 users.

[Bug 88918] Re: Request: sync new agpgart drm modules for 50% DRI performance boost with Intel users

2007-11-19 Thread Conn
Leann,

Thanks for reassigning this bug. Having updated to the Hardy development
release and custom compiling the requisite drm modules, it seems things
things are working fine.

I noticed some interesting developments recently; as of version 2.2.0,
the intel driver will default to EXA acceleration (which uses the new
TTM memory manager, part of the new DRM kernel code) and it seems this
new driver no longer differentiates between i915.dri and i915_tex.dri
DRI modules, obsoleting the Legacy3D option. This means it's more
important than ever to have up-to-date DRI functionality for Hardy's
release, as running with older DRM kernel modules and libraries results
in EXA being in a reduced-performance compatibility mode, as warned in
Xorg.0.log.

As for Gutsy, I'm aware it's too late to have this implemented, thanks.
We should push this for consideration in linux-source-2.6.24, to be
included with Hardy.

Yeah, also tried other distros with no luck. Common factor: Kernel 2.6.22.
Tried some 'oldies' with 2.6.20 and the DO work.

[Bug 141516] Re: Gparted crashes when refreshing devices

2007-11-19 Thread dAniel hAhler
** Summary changed:

- Gparted crashes refreshing devices
+ Gparted crashes when refreshing devices

** Description changed:

- On a MacBook Core2Duo with Gutsy, after a well finished operation on
/dev/sda5 (delete, format) and maybe still with other partition (not tested,
they're in use), i click on the Ok button in the operation window and the
program crashes (it seems to crash immediately after starting the reload of the
devices).
- When I re-open gparted, old operations have been correctly executed and the
program works well... since next operation :)
+ gparted crashes when you press Ctrl-R or Refresh devices from the
+ menu.
+
+ This happens also after all (most?) actions have been carried out, when
+ gparted reloads the list automatically.
+
+ Workaround: start gparted again. All previous actions should have been
+ carried out.

[Bug 138256] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel hangs the system when laptop lid is closed

2007-11-19 Thread Hamish Harvey
I'm getting something which may be related.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics
Device (rev 02)

On resume (from suspend) I got X back, but the screen wouldn't refresh
properly. As I opened windows/menus they would sort of display, but not
be removed from the screen when closed. Everything else appeared to be
working.

After much browsing and fiddling (no records kept, I'm afraid) I came to
this fix:

Add SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=true to /etc/default/acpi-support
Modify /etc/acpi/suspend.d/80-video-pci-state.sh according to attached diff, to
save state from /sys/bus/pci/devices/:00:02.1 (as well as 02.0).

This last change was a stab in the gloom based on:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2007-June/025349.html

Current impression is that suspend and hibernate both work.

[Bug 163891] apt-pkg API differs from the one in Debian

2007-11-19 Thread Cameron Dale
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

The API for methods in the apt-pkg library differs from the one in
Debian. This causes my new apt-transport-debtorrent method to FTBFS on
Ubuntu, and would require me to maintain separate packages for Ubuntu
and Debian, when they should be identical. There has already been a bug
reported in Debian indicating this:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=452001

It seems the problem is mostly in the use of a SetFailExtraMsg()
function on Debian, while Ubuntu's apt uses SetFailReason().

[Bug 163891] Re: apt-pkg API differs from the one in Debian

2007-11-19 Thread Cameron Dale
Attached is the diff between the acquire-method.h files in Debian and
Ubuntu. As I said, the main difference is the use of
SetFailExtraMsg/SetFailReason, but there are some other differences as
well. I used 0.7.6 in Debian and 0.7.6ubuntu14.1 in Ubuntu, but using
0.7.9 in Debian gives similar results.

[Bug 95817] Re: Feisty's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed

2007-11-19 Thread dlublink
Looks like that ext3 changes the order in which the kernel considers the
modules. If it uses orinoco_cs, it boots without problem but cannot
connect to wpa. When I use Reiserfs it takes hostap_cs first ( which
causes the kernel panic ) and doesn't boot.
