\o/ fixed it for my setup. In my case there were some bash-isms in
~/.bashrc and although I tried to be careful to only source it on
interactive logins, I hadn't been careful enough. Once I fixed that I
could login normally. Why the set -x helps I can only imagine.

I confirm that this problem is still present in gutsy. I have to disconnect and
reconnect my keyboard to use it. The problem is not present if I boot Gutsy in
safe mode when X doesn't start.

FYI - The following helped me in my efforts:
nvidia-settings Uncheck Sync to VBlank
sudo killall compiz.real
If compiz.real has been restarted, logins seem to work fine.

- boot the gutsy desktop i386 CD
- start the install icon on dektop
- maximize the installer wizard
- unmaximize it

- the original size is not restored, but it is still on the maximum size

The default would be, to apply the workaround. So each administrator could

The same happens to me.
either on the screensaver of gnome and the xscreensaver.
Fades to black then fades away in ubuntu screensaver

I had the same issue with ogg videos in Impress.
I built screenvideos using Istanbul.
It was funny - one video played - the other not...
my workaround was to import them as video althoug it wasn't recognized by
Impress.
then they played.
