After I executed sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh
force as a root, the system did not go into suspend, but hanged
instead. The power led remained on instead of blinking as expected. I

You should install either xscreensaver or gnome-screensaver. In both
cases you can install the -data, -data-extra -gl and -gl-extra packages.
Ubuntu comes with gnome-screensaver by default, so unless you have

I have the switch user white screen problem as described by exactt as well, but

I can confirm same behavior when working on a document with many images
that I putted by drag and dropping. Xorg starting getting really memory
hungry reaching 1GB resident memory after a short time period

I can reproduce this here too, it turns out that the bug is that sudo is
much more strict about the environement variables and filters everything
out that is not in a special (and very small) whitelist. This includes
http_proxy.
