I was to able to reproduce this on my X700 card with open-source
drivers. So it has nothing to do with restricted modules. It can be in

have been blacklisted for compiz though. Can you please try to get some log
files, like Xorg.0.log? One way would be to boot with safe graphics mode,
then switch to a console:

Perfect, I can confirm that this solves the problem for my
installations:
1.) Delete user-config for java by deleting the file following for each
user
$ rm ~/.openoffice.org2/user/config/javasettings*
2.) Each user has to start OpenOffice and set the JRE in
Tools--Options--Java

even after a normal shutdown. I have however noticed that sometimes a
normal shutdown doesn't go as smoothly as it did in Gutsy etc.

After reinstalling Vista, I then installed WUBI under Vista, and in this
configuration when running Ubuntu 8.04 the CD/DVD drive is recognised.
I do not know why the CD/DVD is recognised in Ubuntu 8.04 when installed
