[Bug 239201] [NEW] firefox locks system

2008-06-11 Thread TheGurke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

After launching firefox I am unable to start any other new applications.
All the programs I started before firefox work fine and can open new windows.
For example, when I try to start synaptic from a terminal, I get the following
error message:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ synaptic
No protocol specified

(synaptic:7682): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

For other applications the message is similar.
I first encountered this bug Friday, 6th of June. When I press the power button
of my computer and the action screen shows up (with standby, logout etc.) the
options shutdown and restart are missing, however they work in a terminal. Also
after I logout and log back in, the problem is gone until starting firefox
again.

I use Hardy Heron patched to the newest version.

[Bug 239200] [NEW] vertical gnome-panel loops with not unique window-names

2008-06-11 Thread dei
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 187540 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187540

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If the gnome-panel with a window-list is placed on the left or right
edge of the screen it loops as soon as two windows have the same names.
It is unresponsible (apart from the qfreqlet applet and the system-
monitor-applet) until I kill the gnome-panel process and it restarts
itself. If i then have closed the 'twin-named' windows it works again,
if they still are running it loops again.

I tried placing the gnome-panel in horizontal position, but then I can't
reproduce the bug, so its connected somehow with the vertical positions.
(Extend is on, Autohide is off, hide-buttons are off), Removing all my
other applets doesn't help either.

This behaviour can easily be reproduced by starting gimp (opens up some
windows named with GIMP)

I'm using Hardy final with a standard gnome-installation and gnome-panel
1:2.22.2-0ubuntu1. Feisty didn't have this bug.

2008-06-11 Thread George Dumitrescu
I got the same problem. This is very annoying because you are losing your work
if is not saved...
I can't tell you what is the problem, but I manage to replicate the method that
makes the gnome to crash.
You must have firefox with a webpage that have flash, and another program (in
my case the console). If I minimize the firefox window several times ... the
gnome crashes...

I manage to recod this on my phone and put it online at :

[Bug 232005] Re: Firefox is already running, but is not responding...

2008-06-11 Thread Fred
Lately, I think yes it does recover after a few seconds. Not entirely
sure.

But before, it did not recover, I had to use 'killall firefox'.

Eitherway, this needs to be fixed. Firefox on Windows does not suffer
from this application. It is very annoying, and prevents me from
recommending Ubuntu.

[Bug 223982] Re: totem starts up when a audiocd is insert. THen it rapports: Location not found.

2008-06-11 Thread TonyR
Hi

You already have answers to the 3 questions your asked.

1. You insert an audio CD into CD drive invoking autoplay.
2. You expect it to play the audio content
3. The application returned the error location not found - what the
application cannot detect the CD drive!

You close the issue without providing a resolution and this is supposed
to help make the application better?

Sorry but this is bullshit!

[Bug 215499] Re: Nautilus not preserving timestamps

2008-06-11 Thread Tormod Volden
Looking at the upstream progress doesn't really reassure me. There was
a patch in April, a few developers commented on it middle of May. Isn't
this a case where we just have to fix it in Ubuntu as soon as possible,
and rather reharmonize with upstream whenever they will reach consensus
on their ideal fix? Changing this behaviour from one release to another
and refer to it as design decision would be quite arrogant towards
normal users using Ubuntu for real work.

The upstream gio-access-time.diff patch applies on Hardy glib2.0. I'll
try it out on my PPA.

[Bug 239193] [NEW] Firefox closes randomly when loading web pages, possible java or flash problem?!?

2008-06-11 Thread dean williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

This has happened very frequently, I will be browsing a website and
while a page is loading the firefox process will just close for no
apparent reason, sometimes this will happen many times on some myspace
profile pages.

I have a slight feeling that this may be caused by Java or Flash since
it happens (according to my observation) only on pages that contain
these technologies.

[Bug 239048] Re: apache2 conf.d and sites-enabled oops

2008-06-11 Thread tgpae
Update: Checking my config history, this was not introduced when I
thought it was. I merely hadn't restarted apache after putting
everything in version control.

The base principle still applies: one should not have the default
configuration preclude revision control. Checking on things further,
Subversion (svn) also puts a subdirectory in each managed directory.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: apache2.2-common

In the latest apache2 default config files, the last lines are

  # Include generic snippets of statements
  Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/

  # Include the virtual host configurations:
  Include /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/

Any serious web server has its files under version control. I believe
many version control packages add additional files to the directory; at
least CVS, RCS, and SCCS do - CVS adds a CVS directory, with a few
special files to point back to the repository, and the other two
actually store all of the repositories within a subdirectory. The two
include lines above will attempt to load all of these revision-control
related files as apache config files, which will not work.

I've kludged this for my system with the following, which has me back up and
running:

  # Include generic snippets of statements
  Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/[a-z]*

  # Include the virtual host configurations:
  Include /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/*-*

- This problem is in apache2-common 2.2.8-1ubuntu0.2; it was not in
apache2-common 2.2.8-1ubuntu0.1.
+ This problem is in apache2-common 2.2.8-1ubuntu0.2.
+ Edit: it was also in apache2-common 2.2.8-1ubuntu0.1.

Hi Adrien, thanks for using Ubuntu, and thanks for taking the time to
contribute by filing this bug report! However, it needs more information
before we can work with it. First, where are you downloading the ISO
from (a URL), and what are you using to download it? From the web (what
application, firefox?) or a torrent file?

You say it stopped downloading at 647.3MB, is this not the full file
size? Does it not work?

Thanks again and I look forward to getting this information!

[Bug 129482] Re: easytag is very very slow

2008-06-11 Thread Hewus
This issue has not been fixed, as I experience it with easytag 2.1.4-1
in Ubuntu Hardy. It's taking 2-3s per file, just to change a tag. The
CPU usage is 100% on one core at all times during this process. My
system specs are not the issue (Core 2 Duo, etc). I'm using XFS.

[Bug 239207] [NEW] Improper changes in ubiquity 1.8.9

2008-06-11 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Filed on behalf of Colin Watson. From email:

I noticed this in an upgrade:

ubiquity (1.8.9) hardy-proposed; urgency=low

 [ Colin Watson ]
 * Make use of RAWMINSIZE, RAWCURSIZE, and RAWMAXSIZE variables from
partman-partitioning 59ubuntu2 to set accurate bounds on the resize
   widget.

This wasn't meant for hardy-proposed for now, only for intrepid; those
variables won't be present unless you have also backported the
partman-partitioning changes. (Backporting those might be a good idea,
but this would need much more testing than I gave it.)

Do you have the -proposed repository enabled? Also please provide the

about the fix in the other package, and so I am reluctant to start again.

I've closed the part of this bug report to do with ov511, the part that you
filed. I would appreciate it if you could open a new bug report against
ov511 for your issue. You can go ahead and just use the same description
as last time.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 23762] Re: Gnome Keyboard layout changes are lost after reboot/-start

2008-06-11 Thread Sawtooth
I have the same problem; If I use the keyboard preferences tool and add
the Greek layout, at the next restart i can click and switch the layout
on the panel, but I cannot actually write in Greek. I don't know if it's
supposed to, but when I do use the panel preferences and add the layout,
xorg.conf is NOT modified.

Anw, the solution above (manually modifying xorf.conf) does the trick
for now. I am sure though that I had tried this before and after a while
it gets reset again.

Actually, I have a more general problem that I think is relevant: I lose
other personal setting at every restart as well. The main gnome panel
moves from where I want it, and the most irritating of all, the Gnome
Keyring prompt comes up, even if I have already install the libpam--blah
blah and HAD (just once) the chance to tick Authenticate automatically
on login... (something like that).

This is surely a bug. Even if some people could work their ways around
it. What is the purpose of GUI if you are not able to use it?

I had the problem with an upgrade-install of ubuntu 8.04 over a very-
well-working 7.10. I decided to clean install 8.04 to see if this fixed
the problem.

It actually worked fine for a couple of days I think. The only thing I
modified was the bluetooth scripts to enable use of my bluetooth mouse.
Does anyone think it's possible this thingy interferes with gnome?

For the record, I search the web and found something about changing home
directory personal settings files ownership. Didnt work either

Still searching!

try to disable your extensions in tools - addons. if that doesnt
help, try to uninstall your flash player. if that helps, consider a

[Bug 238800] Re: policykit not available over NX sessions

2008-06-11 Thread TylerF
My PolicyKit.conf and id output are attached, run as my normal logged
in user before I ran the ck-launch-session command. After running the
ck-launch-session command in the term, I ran ck-list-sessions again
and produced the output in the attached file.

Indeed the following process shows up when I look at the running
processes: /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon.

I don't see any related error messages in syslog or dmesg. I just
recently tried kde by installing kubuntu from the terminal and selecting
to use the KDE login manager (I forget what it's called). However, this
permissions problem existed long before then. NX is configured to load a
gnome session, and all of these are being run from inside my gnome
desktop session.

My two proc related lines from the output of mount are:

proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)

Anything else strangethis is an NX session that I have disconnected
and reconnected to frequently over the past few days (rather than
logging out and starting a new one each time). Like I said, I tried out
KDE via a kubuntu install the other day, which I suppose could have
affected the ck-list-sessions output, but did not have an effect on
whether or not I can unlock admin functions of control panels. The
command I ran to try kde was: sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude
install kubuntu-desktop

Shortly after getting this box running, I accidentally fried the
motherboard and had to replace it but didn't reinstall any software. I
haven't installed any special or non-standard kernels. I have lots of
disks and mount points, although not an excessive amount (a few of them
use FUSE). I'll post if I can think of anything else note worthy.

[Bug 133216] Re: [gutsy] easytag hangs while doing strange things...

2008-06-11 Thread Hewus
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better. I notice that there have been a couple of fixes in 2.1.3
that look similar to your issue:

* Fixed problem with the browser window that stays grayed out if the selected
directory doesn't exist,
* Improved selection of directories, in the browser tree, if it doesn't exist
on the file system, the tree is refreshed automatically.

Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release (Hardy Heron) which includes
easytag 2.1.4-1? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 236613] Re: firefox 3 rc with prism extension crashes when download a file.

2008-06-11 Thread TimMadden
I have found this same bug in the firefox 3 rc. Uninstalling the prism
extension did eliminate the crashing on downloads. However, I am
conerned that moving this bug report to invalid is wrong. Prism is a
major new feature of this new release of firefox where you are to be
able to make webapps out of any website with the prism extension. If
the extension is cause crashes it needs to be fixed. Is there a way to
create a bug on an extension? Maybe it needs to go into firefox's bug
system instead of Ubuntu's... If that is the case I am willing to make
the effort.

I am hooked on Prism for an number of my apps and looking forward to it
moving to 0.9 in the ubuntu repo's. Any idea when that is to happen??

Thanks!

[Bug 238789] Re: kernel 2.6.24-19

2008-06-11 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
The system setup seems pretty normal:
Dual core Intel CPU, Intel ICH5 southbridge, AC97 audio, Ati Radeon graphics,
Realtek 8139 ethernet.
The only suspicious item is the TI ACX111 wifi, which needs the acx100 driver.

A lot of bugs related to acx reported:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/+bugs?field.searchtext=acxorderby=-datecreated
However, non seem serious enough to make a system unbootable.

Giovanni, your latest comment is not clear: do you mean that update
manager and synaptic package manager have disappeared from the system
menu?

Also, can you check if your wifi card works with the -18 kernel? What
about the microphone?

Finally, I am going to need you to try booting the -19 kernel (without
the 'quiet' and 'splash' options) and tell me the error messages of the
kernel log...

[Bug 238849] Re: Unable to type in Arabic

2008-06-11 Thread Amr Ahmed
Thanks for your reply.

I'm on a Gnome desktop.

It's possible to type in Arabic if I do the following:

1) remove Arabic package from language support
2) unclick enable complex characters from language support
3) remove Arabic from keyboardlayout
4) add Arabic to keyboardlayout

The thing is that every time I re-boot the machine I have to go through
steps 3) and 4) to be able to type in Arabic. Why are my settings at
keyboardlayout lost the moment I turn the machine off?

Thanks again for your support.

[Bug 239215] [NEW] kernel panics when executing conntrackd -c

2008-06-11 Thread Rainer Sabelka
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 server for a pair of redundant firewalls with keepalived
and conntackd (conntrack-tools).
The systems run the current ubuntu 2.6.24-18.32 server kernel.
Whenever I execute conntrackd -c i get either a kernel oops or a kernel panic.

I've attached a scenshot of the kernel panic.

I've already reported this bug upstream to the netfilter-devel list (see
this thread: http://marc.info/?l=netfilter-develm=121310368207731w=2)

The underlying problem has already been fixed in 2.6.26-rc.
Krzysztof Oledzki provided a backport for the fix consisting of 4 patches (see
http://marc.info/?l=netfilter-develm=121316653716813w=2)
which I applied to the current Ubuntu linux-source.
These patches indeed fixed the kernel panic and oopses I got on my system.

It would be nice, if this could also fixed in the kernel of Ubuntu 8.04.
Especially since this is a LTS distribution which people may use as a
basis for building network appliances like iptable firewalls, routers,
load balancers etc. this fix seems rater important.
