This has existed in Unix for decades - use ln to create a hardlink and

[Bug 301270] [NEW] Rhythmbox randomly keeps running in the background and won't restart until killed

2008-11-23 Thread Milan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This is in Intrepid, rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2.

From time to time, when I try to start Rhythmbox, it does nothing.
Actually, using a terminal and --debug, I saw new instances of rhythmbox
are just exiting normally: there is already a running instance in the
background, which is not visible. A mere 'killall rhythmbox' stops this
process and allows me to run Rhythmbox again. My guess is Rhythmbox does
not stop completely when I close it.

I could not find any clear reason why sometimes this happens and
sometimes not.

Attached is the backtrace of the hanging process using gdb

[Bug 253422] Re: Realtek ALC883 speakers don't mute when headphones plugged in

2008-11-23 Thread OrelEagle
I didn't know I had SPDIF... There are 3 connectors on my sound card:
microphone, headphones and a blue one. There is a symbol which makes me
think of an antenna (similar to
http://www.wpclipart.com/telephone/antenna.png without the pedestal) and
no SPDIF written under it.

According to wikipedia
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_card#Color_codes) it should be an
analog line level audio input, so I don't think it's SPDIF (as you wrote
it's an optical audio output) except if they use the same colour
(wikipedia doesn't tell which colour is used by SPDIF).

If I get the opportunity to test a SPDIF system, I'll post the result
here.

Microphone has always been working perfectly.

[Bug 292606] Re: dkms - error when installing custom kernel

2008-11-23 Thread MarcHess
Hello

I had the same Problem. I solved it like this:

Boot system in FileSave Mode
Go to root Console
do apt-get purge nvidia-common
install your Kernel. dpkk -i KERNEL.deb
when done reinstall the nvidia-common Package apt-get install nvidia-common

It worked for me. Everything fine. Nvidia Drivers are working

But be carefull, i'm not an experienced Linux User. I have just compiled
my first kernel. Its running, so i think i should be Ok. But i did'nt
really know what i was doing:-)

[Bug 301257] [NEW] NetworkManager slows down skype

2008-11-23 Thread Oxenfrogga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi folks,

I recently upgraded my girlfriend's laptop to Intrepid.
Afterwards I found out that when we're talking via skype the quality of the
connection from her to me is a lot worse than before (sometimes I could hear
just noise). The problem persisted all the time (reboots, different days, ...)
but vanished after
$ sudo update-rc.d -f NetworkManager  remove
and editing /etc/network/interfaces by hand, followed by a reboot. Besides the
sky application she could not find any other problems related to internet
connections.

I have to add that she's having a WLan-card which was enabled, but not
connected. Her internet connection was established via cable and the
XUbuntu installation is not a fresh one, but some 1,5 years old, but
always up-to-date. Additionally, I have to admit that the computer is an
old one, lspci gives:

00:0a.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01)
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 74)

In a way the problem is solved, but not in a satisfying way ...

Please contact me if you need new information!

Thanks,
Harald

[Bug 264196] Re: [intrepid] keyboard Repeat Keys is failing to adjust, when AutoAddDevices is on

2008-11-23 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
I'm the author of the bug #278078 post. Reading this current bug
description comments, I can see that both bugreports seems to be

Unfortunately, I haven't got luck with the upstream developers since I
opened the bugreport in freedesktop on 2008-10-06:

The xset r rate 500 25 workaround serves as a method to ease the
reproduction of the left, down end keys issue.

[Bug 35530] Re: USB Keyboard not working

2008-11-23 Thread Gene Cumm
I personally can confirm the issue. I first noticed it with another
Linux distro (a rescue distro) that loaded menu.c32 by default. From
syslinux 3.53 to 3.61, the bug existed. The last patch (to the syslinux
core/) before 3.62 resolved the issue. 3.62 and later work without any
known issues with respect to this. Certain older versions also do not
have this issue.

I've only noticed it with the Dell OptiPlex GX620 and BIOS A11. A10 and
below do not have this issue. If menu.c32/vesamenu.c32 was not loaded,
the USB keyboard worked without any troubles (using the vanilla
syslinux).

I can provide binaries and/or the commit SHA1 name if needed.

[Bug 301235] [NEW] nautilus does not display network and network folders, however network files are accessable using smb://diskstation/folder/

2008-11-23 Thread kikl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm using nautilus 2.24.1. on my desktop computer running ubuntu 8.10.
The computer is connected to a synology diskstation DS107+ via a router.
The diskstation is my file server. The server name on the network is
diskstation. The diskstation is not displayed, in network:/// or smb:///
on nautilus. If I enter smb://diskstation/ the folders on the
diskstation are not displayed. However, once I enter
smb://diskstation/foldername/ I can access the files on the diskstation.

So, apparently, the file server is working, but nautilus isn't
displaying the top level folders as it should.

I hope you can fix this.

Regards

[Bug 296903] Re: yelp crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()

dust - from the upstream bug report:

The valgrind log doesn't seem to have resulted from the same programme run that

The valgrind log however does contains some mem leaks and invalid reads in yelp

Would you mind providing another valgrind log from a run where the crash
occurs?

[Bug 301239] [NEW] popup mismatch in grouped view of todo-list

2008-11-23 Thread JF Jarry
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10 / Evolution 2.24.1

When tasks are just listed (sorted or no), a detail popup appears when
the mouse stays over a task.

When tasks are grouped on one field, the detail popup doesn't correspond
to the task the mouse is over.

In attached screenshot, mouse is over task B-2 and gives details about
task A-1 (a Custom View window shows how fields are displayed, grouped
and sorted).

[Bug 301218] Re: User Switcher has quit unexpectedly

2008-11-23 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

As you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Once you have done this,
repeat the steps necessary to recreate the crash.

If you don't see a crash notification and you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome
desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory
and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 301271] [NEW] FUSA: More separators please

2008-11-23 Thread Dave Gilbert

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

(On Intrepid) I see on the FUSA menu:

  Guest session

  Shutdown

I suggest moving the suspend and hibernate and isolating them with separators
since those two options
shouldn't cause you to lose any work from running apps where the others in that
group would.

[Bug 301280] [NEW] Nikon D2H camera cannot be mounted (USB)

2008-11-23 Thread Damien
Public bug reported:

Hi all,

My Nikon D2H camera cannot be mounted as a USB mass storage device on
Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-generic. It still works flawlessly with
Knoppix 3.4 (kernel 2.6.6!) or when using a USB reader. Unfortunately
the camera was not used for 6 months so I can't tell exactly when the
bug appeared.

This problem is possibly related to other Nikon/USB issues, e.g.

[Bug 301278] [NEW] All SDL apps crash in DirectFB on PPC

2008-11-23 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Public bug reported:

This problem's first symptom is that you are completely logged out of
your X session as soon as you try to run something like Tuxpaint on PPC.
I have seen it on Fedora, Debian Lenny and Intrepid. Etch worked fine,
probably because directfb was version 0.9.

I have stepped though Tuxpaint until an SDL init:

SDL_Init(1048625)
(Those flags are: SDL_INIT_VIDEO | SDL_INIT_TIMER | SDL_INIT_AUDO |
SDL_INIT_NOPARACHUTE)

I then stepped through the SDL code until here:
DirectFB_CreateDevice (devindex=value optimized out) at
../../src/video/directfb/SDL_DirectFB_video.c:123

DirectFB_CreateDevice crashes. It sometimes prints the error below, but mostly
it doesn't print anything, it just terminates the session. Since it looks
permissions related I have
run everything as root but that doesn't help.

[Bug 301282] [NEW] Thinkpad T60: Brightness is not at maximum, despite brightness indicator

2008-11-23 Thread shap
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Hello !
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my ThinkPad T60 Type: 1951-AG6.

Problem:
Brightness applet shows that I am at 100% brightness but I still one step
behind.
I can press Fn-Home to increase it one step more.

So I find myself pressing Fn-Home every time after returning from hibernation
or after
restart.

Brightness also changing to one step behind intermidiate - probably
related to gnome power management module.

What wireless encryption are you using? I had a similar problem and
found (in another bug report somewhere) that moving from WPA to WEP is a
workaround for the problem, which for me it was.

[Bug 301287] [NEW] Rhythmbox freeze between tracks

2008-11-23 Thread Felix Crux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Although this does not happen consistently, Rhythmbox has had a number
of complete freezeups when switching tracks. The UI becomes somewhat
blanked out (outlines of some elements are visible, but no text or
widgets), and sound output stops. The app becomes completely
unresponsive and has to be killed.

After relaunching Rhythmbox, attempting to play a track results in the
message Couldn't start playback: failed to open output device. Some
other sound-capable apps are also affected: after such a crash, both VLC
and Totem lose audio capabilities, but others, for example, embedded
flash (e.g. YouTube) plays fine.

Running Jaunty (9.04) alpha 1.

[Bug 301286] [NEW] dolphin crashes system with huge images

2008-11-23 Thread georg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dolphin

If you have a real huge image a folder dolphin trys to create a
thumbnail. It allocates a lot of memory (surprise, surprise) and at some
point it starts to swap. When this point is reached your system goes
unstable and you are happy if you don't need to kill X.

Summary:
Put some real huge image in Folder open it in dolphin and press preview. I used
a 105M big png.
