[Bug 298031] Re: Canon Pixma MP520

2008-11-27 Thread mcgyver
First I got to tell that I use Hardy 64 bit. I got my Canon MP520
working with a Gutenprinter driver, works very well. However, I can't my
scanner working I tried about 6 methods I found on Internet. If you have
the 32 bits (i386 version Ubuntu) you can get the printer and the
scanner working with the Canon drivers for Linux (to be found on their
website). The scanner will also work with Xsane (or Gimp?)

I would like some help with the scanner part for 64 bit Hardy.

[Bug 294134] Re: upgrade 8.10 tool failes because it cannot calculate upgrade

2008-11-27 Thread Martin Pitt
Please don't entirely remove the postgresql regexp, it would mean a
grave data-loss problem for users of postgresql. If you have
postgresql-8.2, postgresql-plperl-8.2 installed, then they should NOT be
removed on upgrade to 8.10, where only 8.3 is supported and 8.2 is in
universe. postgresql-common will take care of notifying the user and
doing the upgrade path.

Please revert this in jaunty.

2008-11-06 04:17:20,865 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'An essential package

although blacklisting it did nothing in subsequent reboots prior to the kernel
update.
The cpu being locked into its lowest setting is fixed though. I wish I knew
specifically what was causing these issues. If it wasnt for this update I would
be stuck. I can't turn off acpi in the BIOS and retain frequency scaling in the
OS.

[Bug 259168] Re: Network Manager unable to connect to PPTP VPN (bad NT-Domain escaping)

2008-11-27 Thread Martin Pitt
** Description changed:

  To verify:
   1. check that you cannot connect to pptp and you are using a NT-Domain in
the conncetion config
   2. verify that this is your bug: leave the NT-Domain field empty; instead
encode it in username like:
NT_DOMAIN\USERNAME (e.g. mydomain\myuser)
   3. upgrade to fixed package and see that it works without the trick in 2.

[Bug 295405] Re: fails to run lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper

2008-11-27 Thread Martin Pitt
Ah, that would indeed be it. Now, the interesting question is indeed how
that happened. I believe you that you didn't hand-edited that, it would
be a very unusual thing to do. Did you ever use sytem -> admin -> users
and groups? (the program "users-admin"). In earlier releases it had a
grave bug which removed users from groups, but that was fixed around the
dapper to feisty timeframe. But it's entirely possible that it has
another bug which scrambles group IDs. It's the first time I see it,
though.

> QUESTION: Is there a chance of files existing where the group
permissions are for the wrong gid?

Yes, that's technically possible. Create a user or group, chmod/chgrp
the file, remove the user/group.

Yes. Works as expected using any of Autodetect, OSS, ALSA and

[Bug 293548] Re: can't save file in samba share

2008-11-27 Thread Giuseppe Barichello
Not sure it is a gvfs problem: I'm running xubuntu and mounting samba shares
through a command in /etc/network/interfaces using smbmount.
I get the same behaviour described above: can create, move, rename and delete
files using thunar or shell or mc. But when I try to save a file from an
application (OO, but also scite, mousepad...) I get either I/O error or write
error.

I suggest to increase bug importance, since it is really annoying for
all-day working on shared folders.

Hello Mathias,

the patch in CVS can be found in:

http://www.openldap.org/devel/cvsweb.cgi/servers/slapd/overlays/rwmconf.c?hideattic=1&sortbydate=0
( search for ITS#5647 ).

I read through the Stable Release Updates... seems like I have to build
openldap from source ;-(.

[Bug 302672] Re: new transmission upstream version 1.40

2008-11-27 Thread Daniel Holbach
A few things:
 - for me it fails to build in jaunty with "Dependency is not satisfiable:
libcurl-dev"
 - I'm not sure bumping the Build-Depends is necessary (it's another diff from
Debian and we have new build-depends in almost all Ubuntu releases anyway)
 - you could have just used "uscan --download" to get the new tarball :)
 - the .dsc file is not necessary in this case (it has the md5sum of the
tarball that you built)

Other than that: good work!

[Bug 302251] Re: package libcanberra-gtk0 0.6-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play', which is also in package libcanberra-gnome

2008-11-27 Thread Hew McLachlan
This is fixed now by the latest ubuntu-meta, however libcanberra-gnome
first needs to be manually removed. I think this something that needs to
be taken care of by update-manager, or by a Replaces dependency.

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

Debian maintainer. The package builds and installs fine in a Jaunty chroot.

[Bug 303039] [NEW] "Kivio cannot be installed on your computer type (i386)" error in gnome-app-install

2008-11-27 Thread SwedishWings
Public bug reported:

When i go to Applications -> Add/Remove... and search for Kivio i find
the application, but is given the following error when trying to install
Kivio:

> Kivio cannot be installed on your computer type (i386).
> Either the application requires special hardware features
> or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.

However, "sudo aptitude install kivio" installs Kivio successfully
without warning or errors, so it appears that this problem only relates
to gnome-app-install.

I run a vanilla Ubuntu 8.04.

Please look at this thread for more information:

[Bug 281951] Re: Acer Aspire 5920G Fn keys not working correctly

2008-11-27 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Here's a fix for the € and $ keys:
echo 'keycode 186 = dollar dollar dollar dollar dollar' | xmodmap -
echo 'keycode 185 = EuroSign EuroSign EuroSign EuroSign EuroSign' | xmodmap -

185 and 186 are the keys "scrollup" and "scrolldown" in which I've mapped the
Euro and Dollar keys in my previously attached 30-keymap-acer.fdi.
Put the above commands in a startup script.

So, here it goes:
€$€$€$€$€$€$€$€$€$€$
;-)

I'll post again if I find out how to fix the brightness double
increasing / descreasing.

[Bug 282222] Re: Emacs installed but not in Applications

2008-11-27 Thread era
If I understand this correctly, you downloaded Emacs from somewhere else
(where?) the first time. Ubuntu cannot be expected to know about third-
party downloads, although if you can provide a link to where you got it,
this could be turned into a "wishlist" bug for providing integration
support for the third-party package you installed.

Or is this bug about not finding Emacs in the Applications menu after
you installed with Add/Remove like it says in your original bug report?
But now you are telling us that you did find the menu item after
installing with Add/Remove. Could you please clarify; if this scenario
was problematic for you, what exactly was the problem?

If you use a Live CD, perhaps you want to look into booting Ubuntu from
a USB stick in "persistent" mode. This allows you to keep your own
customizations (including installed packages) without installing Ubuntu
to a hard disk.

[Bug 252977] Re: Hardy and Intrepid freeze with kernel error: "Eeek! page_mapcount(page) went negative! (-1)"

2008-11-27 Thread Richard Corner
OK, since the early releases of Intrepid I have not had this particular
problem. Though there have been a lot of freezeups during boot on this
particular machine I have not seen the "Eeek!" message or the freezeups
while using the desktop.

But today I upgraded to the following:

Linux blackbox 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

and the error is back! Xubuntu booted fine then, as before with Hardy,
suddenly froze while I was using Firefox at the desktop.

See the attached syslog:

[Bug 189304] Re: Can't lower I/O priority with ionice as a user

2008-11-27 Thread Daniel T Chen
This is actually a design decision, and it's reflected in the ionice(1) man
page (on jaunty):
...
Idle. A program running with idle io priority will only get disk
time when no other program has asked for disk io for a defined
grace period. The impact of idle io processes on normal system
activity should be zero. This scheduling class does not take a pri‐
ority argument. Presently, this scheduling class is permitted for
an ordinary user (since kernel 2.6.25).
...
