Thank you! Confirmed that this works on a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a
Hitachi HTS721010G9AT00. There are load cycles on battery power but not
on AC.

2008-12-19 Thread essl
Just checking if I did everything right:
Added the repositories sources from the first link, did update in synaptics (it
included xorg intel stuff),
Removed xorg.conf (it does auto config then if I understand right). Did `xinit

I hope I did something wrong because it's still white :(

Are you confusing NFS with NTFS? They're completely different
things... If you aren't, then the NFS problems probably aren't
specific to exporting NTFS filesystems. I mostly use XFS (which, like
ext3, has support in the Linux kernel, not through FUSE like NTFS 3g).

Anyway, this NTFS stuff seems to be coming out of nowhere, maybe
since your bug is marked as a duplicate of 306016, and I haven't read
most of the info on bug 308537. If you're now talking about a
different bug that's specific to NTFS, unmark that as a duplicate or
something.

Yes, it's mostly solved. I switched my server in sources to one which
seems to have a more complete repository, then did an apt-get update. I
noticed many of the updates were with firefox. Now I don't get the

2008-12-19 Thread George
I believe I have the same bug on a similar, but not identical adapter.

Here is the output of lspci | grep VGA:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM
Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)

and here's glxinfo | grep direct:

direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set)

I have tested with the new driver and nothing is changed.

My xorg.conf is the Intrepid default, no custom settings.

[Bug 292098] Re: okular can't presentation fullscreen

2008-12-19 Thread Richard Johnson
The issue at hand is with the kwinrulesrc in the kubuntu-default-
settings package. We need to either remove this setting (which I think
we should do) or get the sizing stuff correct (either in the rc file or
fix a possible issue in kwinrules).

I say we remove the following from kubuntu-default-
settings/kde4-profile/default/share/config/kwinrulesrc:

[15]
Description=Okular initial default size
size=750,560
sizerule=3
types=1
wmclass=okular
wmclasscomplete=false
wmclassmatch=1

Do any of the Kubuntu devs know why we have this setting? Is it because
of the weird window size Okular used to start up as a while back? As it
would start up very small and in the top left hand corner of the screen.

Also changing the Importance to low as this report does not qualify for
anything higher. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Till..

Hardy does auto detect my printer, and adds a generic text only driver.

To implement your suggestion, I copied the entire folder from
/usr/share/system-config-printer from hardy to the Intrepid installation.
Still there is no result. Please suggest what else I can do for this.

Thanks

PS: If you need , I ll make a video of hardy auto-detecting the printer.

I am sorry however I am unable to do the testing any more since I bought a

Thank you very much for your efforts!

[Bug 308787] Re: Kernel Bug related to CPUFreq; Causes Powernowd to hang

2008-12-19 Thread sleon
On my system using 2.6.7-11 successfully got past the hang.

It's a Toshiba laptop (P305D-S8828), RM-70 proc. Previously, system
would consistently hang at starting powernowd. Changing "Dynamic CPU
Frequency Mode" in the BIOS to "Always Low" was the only way to get a
successful boot.

Now using 2.6.27-11, the setting can be kept at "Dynamic" in BIOS. Due
to a different problem later in the boot process I couldn't get
completely through to the desktop. But it got past the powernowd point
every time.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 307829] Re: DVD playback jerky with pata_amd

2008-12-19 Thread Jason Feldstein
Wait, wait, don't follow those directions exactly as they are.

After step 3, you need to edit your xorg.conf file (same way as in step
8) and change "nvidia" to "nv" in the Device section. Then reboot the
computer, make sure you select the custom kernel (it ends with -v3000)
and start with step 4. When you get to step 8, change the driver back to
nvidia.

[Bug 307829] Re: DVD playback jerky with pata_amd

2008-12-19 Thread Jason Feldstein
Worry not... most later Semprons are also 64-bit, though it's generally
unadvertised. The information you posted above makes it look like yours
is too, and you have pretty much the same hardware I do besides that, so
you should be able to use my custom kernel without a problem.

Here's a quick guide to how to proceed:

0. Plug in an ethernet cable for now. This will temporarily break your
wireless.

1. download the kernel archive from rapidshare, unzip it, and install
the two .deb files

2. go to www.nvidia.com and download the latest Linux driver... should
be version 177.82. put it on your desktop. also go to the link I posted
above for the Broadcom STA driver and download the file they mention on
that page; put it on your desktop also.

3. in a terminal, run the following command: "sudo apt-get --purge
remove linux-restricted-modules-* nvidia-*" (without the quotes). It
will ask you for your password.

4. Once that's done, hit ctrl-alt-f1, which will take you to a console
screen. log in, and then get to your desktop ("cd Desktop").

5. Stop your X server from running: "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop"

6. Install the build package ("sudo apt-get install build-essential"),
so that the NVIDIA driver will compile.

7. Set the NVIDIA driver to be able to run ("sudo chmod 777 NVIDIA-
whatever-the-driver-name-is.run") and then install it ("sudo ./NVIDIA-
whatever-the-driver-name-is.run") and pretty much follow the prompts. It
will compile and install.

8. Check your xorg.conf file ("sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf") and make sure the
"Device" section includes the line: "Driver" "nvidia"
(if it doesn't, add it anywhere before EndSection.)

9. Restart your X server (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start). If you removed
all the restricted modules and nvidia packages, it should work just like
it did before.

10. Follow the instructions on the link above for installing the
Broadcom STA driver.

11. Enjoy your newly-working-properly DVD drive.

sure where to file this one. I picked 260918 since it was listed as the
mother bug, but 292086 might be more appropriate.

[Bug 272210] Re: Megatunix needs to be packaged and added to the repository.

2008-12-19 Thread Alan Barrow
Hello Craig,

You can still package formally if you want. :-) I was not aware you had
taken this on, and did it a while ago as I needed it for some work I was
doing.

The author has already incorporated my packaging into his builds. Debs
are available on the sourceforge site from release 0.9.18 on:

< http://megatunix.sourceforge.net >

I'm maintaining an Informal repository:

deb http://pinztrek.com/repository/ stable main
deb http://pinztrek.com/repository/ testing main

Testing has the new release code until it has been out for 2-3 week,
then it moves to stable. From there I keep periodic builds of the latest
cvs code in testing for experimenters.

I also have some megatunix ubuntu & ubuntu mini-remix livecd's rolled
that some are using. (desktop full, xubuntu, and a mini/icewm version)

Have fun,

Alan

Re: [Bug 285098] Re: [i965] intel 965 + compiz + suspend -> corrupt alt-tab icons

2008-12-19 Thread Russell Sears
Confirmed w/ new drivers. Rebooted; still got corruption.

This is what the upgrade did:

libdrm2-dbg will be removed
libdrm-dev (version 2.3.1-0build1) will be upgraded to version
2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid
libdrm2 (version 2.3.1-0build1) will be upgraded to version
2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid
xserver-xorg-video-intel (version 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10) will be upgraded to
version 2:2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid
libdrm-intel1 (version 2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid) will be installed

(This is probably all irrelevant, but: For what it's worth, the old
versions were hacked-up backports of drm 2.4 and intel 2.5. Metacity
has been very stable with this configuration, but compiz occasionally
fails to resume, or just hangs, especially when changing screen
resolutions. However, my intel wifi driver causes kernel panics when I
connect to WPA networks, so it's possible I'm seeing an occasionaly
metacity crash, and don't realize it.)

2008-12-19 Thread Datadog
I have the same problem with both printers configured on my system,
however the collate "fix" only works for one of them.

I'm using a LaserJet 4250n, connected using IPP printing (JetDirect).
I'm also using a Toshiba eStudio 451c, connected as well using IPP.
Selecting collate in the print dialog will cause the HP to print the
requested number of copies. However, the trick doesn't work for the
Toshiba. I haven't found a way to get the Toshiba to print more than
one copy at all yet. I have had these printers configured and working
without problems for at least 3 years now and this problem only started
after upgrading to 8.10. They were both working as expected under 8.04.

[Bug 116750] Re: [upstream] word processor exits without error after paste of html text

2008-12-19 Thread Chris Cheney
Actually Hardy/Intrepid only have 2.4.1. The reason I pushed the
milestone back to jaunty-alpha-3 was due to the fact that openoffice.org
1:3.0.0-6ubuntu1 still hasn't built yet even though it was uploaded a
few weeks ago due to needing MIR processsing on several packages. I can
no longer reproduce this bug with the new 3.0.0 for intrepid that is in
the openoffice-pkgs ppa.

ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x9 t4

Mark, the bug I am referring to I have seen on four different computers
all with different video cards. Nvidia, Intel, and another. They all
have this exact same artifact occuring at the same places with the exact
same set up of awn. The point is that I am certain this is the same bug
that is causing the artifacts that have started being persistent with
the 173 series Nvidia drivers. The reason I am certain is that the
artifacts happen at exactly the same places in the same situations on
all computers, the only difference is that those artifacts persist on
the computer with the nvidia card.

[Bug 309901] Re: SATA timeout during heavy disk activity

2008-12-19 Thread Noel J. Bergman
All that I saw in your logs is:

  [176710.082603] ata5: soft resetting link

But ata5 is not your hard drive:

  [6.322766] ata5.01: ATAPI: TDK CDRW401240B, Z7SB, max UDMA/33

Do you know which hard drive is causing the problem, and do you have log
entries for it? For example, although you don't have one, I know that
there are known issues with the Seagate 1.5TB drive, and I see similar
reports on the net, e.g.,

  http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/6/23/250
  http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/11/1/396

One of those pointed to http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/4/18/32, which
discussed drives whose implementation is defective.

Same problem as jeldert. I have disabled the "Legacy Fullscreen" option

compiz stuff (scale, etc). You must "click" on the invisible "window" to
make it appear again. Other than that it seems to "work"...

If I were you, I'd file a bug report with Nvidia about that, to ensure
that this sort of thing doesn't happen in the future.

Regardless, my point here is that in the bug in question, people
apparently have experienced a significant increase in artifacts between
distribution versions in the first half of 2008 (e.g., Fedora 9, Ubuntu
Hardy) and the second half of 2008 (e.g., Fedora 10, Ubuntu Intrepid),
with regards to Nvidia users. This has apparently been fixed with the
180 driver series. Those who can't use the 180 driver series should file
bugs with Nvidia, asking them to backport the xrender fixes.

Those with other video cards do not have the artifacts with the same
proportions as the people in the bug.

Hi there.
Please run the following command;
sudo apt-get remove gnome-games && sudo apt-get install gnome-games

This will do a clean reinstall of the gnome-games package. Please try
this, and try to recreate the problem again, and then notify us of the
result.
Thanks
