I have found out that DPMS stuff actually works AFTER RECOVERING from a
suspend to ram/disk. It does not work on a first clean boot but after a
suspend action it works just fine. I'm using KDE 4.2 Beta2.

[Jaunty] Suspend/resume failure on ThinkPad T61 (pulseaudio-related?)

WORKAROUND:
This issue doesn't arise if the system uses uswsusp rather than the
kernel's method of hibernation. So, the fix is to force gnome-power-
management to use s2disk rather than the kernel method. This is fairly
simple to do:
Download the attached script hal-system-power-hibernate-linux
the clearlooks engine is used by the builtin default ltsp theme which is
used as a fallback. it must be installed in any case to provide a safe
fallback mechanism.
