All of my previous testing was done on the 2.6.27-7 kernel...and so,
following your lead, I updated to the 2.6.27-9 kernel and the 2.6.27-11
kernel after that. After all updates (including installing the linux-
backports-modules for each kernel version), the problem is still
unresolved.

I have managed to find a workaround for installation from Ubuntu 8.10
livecd:
1) Boot with "break=top" option
2) At BusyBox prompt, execute
echo 'options libata dma=0' >> /etc/modprobe.d/options
3) Ctrl-D, and continue install as usual

I can confirm that modelines in xorg.conf are also ignored in Intrepid
64-bit. I supplied a modeline for my Toshiba 65HM167 but it was
ignored. Real bummer because my TV has a decent bit of overscan that
can't be adjusted on the TV's side, so I need to do it from within
Linux.

I was experiencing the same problem (no sound with VT1708B) and installed
Jaunty and still didn't have sound. I have a M3N78-VM motherboard with video
and audio on-board, a AMD Athalon 5050e, 8GB RAM.
I installed Jaunty as an update to Ubuntu 8.10 (I don't know if that matters).
And just to pas
I have the same problem. I'm using 8.10 with updated kernel (i686
version).
I'm attaching outputs of:
- egrep "radeon|agp" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- dmesg |grep agp
- lspci
and
- my xorg.conf (separate file)

(II) Load
I now tried the jaunty daily alternate disk, and installed it on a spare
hard disk of mine. The installation went fine, but when rebooting the
new system, X behaved in the same manner as for the jaunty live
described above. This time, however, when I chose "Archive configuration
and logs", /var/lo
n.b., I switched back to carrier (Bitlbee problems), and it doesn't have
this problem, so Pidgin is probably fine too.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with the i810 video chipset.
I have also disabled Xinerama with the xorg.conf option:
