[Bug 246121] Re: A black screen is the result of using Application Switcher to switch from an Application to Firefox 3.0 in Full Screen Mode on another Workspace.

2009-01-02 Thread Andrew LeCody
I have a similar issue, when any window is fullscreen, I can alt-tab,
but as soon as I tab back to the full screen window X/Compiz appears to
lock up. I am able to get control again after switching to tty1 and then
back. I have noticed this behavior with Mplayer, VLC and Firefox all
when in fullscreen mode. This bug disappears when Compiz is disabled and
returns with Compiz.

I've also narrowed it down to the "Application Switcher" and "Static
Application Switcher" plugins. The bug does not occur with "Ring
Switcher" or "Shift Switcher".

My computer is running Ubuntu 8.10 and is up to date. Running on a Core
2 Duo E6420 and GeForce 8800 GTS, using Nvidia driver version 177.

I can consistently reproduce the issue, please feel free to point and
laugh if I forgot any important information. :)

The same here. Only when external display attached poweroff/reboot randomly
just blanks the screen, fan is still running, wlan switch is working, keyboard
has no affect. Ibex 8.10 release with the latest patches.
Is there any way to trace/debug this?

This bug should be really fixed, as most of the GNU/Linux users uses

[Bug 313397] [NEW] gnome-panel missing bottom buttons and desktop switcher problems with dual monitor

2009-01-02 Thread Graham
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Release: Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10
gnome-panel:
  Installed: 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2.1

Using a dual monitor setup and a recent update has broken some things in
gnome-panel.

All visible windows on the current workspace should have buttons on the
bottom panel. The bottom panel now only displays buttons for windows
that are opened in the left hand screen. Buttons appear as windows are
dragged to the left and disappear as windows are dragged to the right
screen.

workspace-switcher used to display the full workspace as a wide
rectangle. There is now a grey dividing line in the middle of each
workspace and only the left half of the workspace highlights when
selecting between workspaces.

[Bug 203574] Re: "Eject" should eject the CD-ROM drive tray

Confirmed on Ubuntu 8.10 with updates. This is a particularly
problematic problem on CD drives without a manual eject button (e.g.

report, I did not know how to eject my CD without rebooting.

[Bug 256637] Re: ata3: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)

2009-01-02 Thread Peter Klotz
@PrivateVoid:

You can try disabling AHCI in your BIOS. Maybe this fixes the problem. Change
setting "Advanced"|"IDE Configuration"|"SATA Operation Mode" from "Enhanced" to
"Compatible".
However if you have a parallel installation of Windows XP (made in AHCI mode)
this will no longer boot.

You may also post to linux-ide to confirm the suspicion of a firmware
issue.

If it is really a firmware issue then become an Asus Member
(http://member.asus.com/) and file a request like I did. Maybe the more
people complain about this issue the higher the chances that Asus
reacts.

[Bug 313393] [NEW] gobby only listens for ipv6 connections

2009-01-02 Thread marmuta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gobby

Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha2
linux-image 2.6.28.4.4
gobby 0.4.8-1

With ipv6 enabled Gobby listens only on the unspecified ip6 address ::.
It becomes inaccessible over ip4 and there appears to be no way to manually
change the interface it binds to.

This is similar to vinos bug #196675.

TEST CASE:
$ gobby
press button "Create Session"
$ sudo netstat -taupn | grep gobby
tcp6   0  0 :::6522 :::*LISTEN

I expected it to be accessible for both ip6 and ip4 or allow to specify the
listening address manually.

[Bug 95569] Re: CPU frequency scaling causes crash

2009-01-02 Thread miguelquiros
I am dissappointed that this bug has been marked as "low importance" and
"won't fix". The problem still exists and it's quite serious, even if it
seems to affect only to a limited number of people. Setting
cpufreq_ac_policy to conservative in gnome-power-manager does not
completely solve the problem. It simply makes it very less frequent.
Obviously the hang happens when CPU frequency changes and these
frequency changes are less frequent in "conservative" than in
"ondemand".

[Bug 77702] Re: Memory leak in xfce4-menu-plugin

2009-01-02 Thread markor
I am using Xubuntu Hardy/8.04.1 LTS amd64/x86_64 version
My xfce4-menu-plugin can grow to insane values, sometimes over 200MB
Currently while I am writing this it is 148MB since I am runing it few days now.
(As seen from System monitor)
I removed menu plugin from panel and added it again few days ago and
upon start it takes about 12MB..

[Bug 313385] Re: losetup 32bit offset limit, hangs on retry, remains defunct

2009-01-02 Thread AmenophisIII
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: util-linux

i made a dd image of my laptop drive and try to work with it (mount,
  resizing etc).

  # losetup -a
  /dev/loop0: [fe01]:29253634 (/image.dd)

  # fdisk -lu /dev/loop0

  Disk /dev/loop0: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes
  240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7752 cylinders, total 117210240 sectors

  /dev/loop0p5 8815023 11721023954197608+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

the first partition is about 4,5GB, the rest is a logical partition.
i first tried to use http://vytautas.jakutis.lt/node/26 but that did not work
and i did not look into it, because i knew of the offset method as described
here http://www.fluidsignal.com/en/publications/knowledge/20080923090245 .
so... i tried to use the losetup -o option to create loop devices for the
partitions.
  offset = start block * 512
  offset p1 = 63 * 512 = 32256
  => losetup -fo 32256 /dev/loop0
this worked ok (can't redo atm, see below)

  offset p5 = 4513291776
  this is > 2^32.
if i try to use that offset, it seems to work ok the first time (it returns
instantly), but does not create a new loop device.
if you try it again, it hangs with consuming 100% cpu time of one core.
  i straced it afterwards:

  i use util-linux 2.14-1ubuntu2

  i cant rmmod loop.

[Bug 312601] Re: 8.10 not autodetecting my sound card

2009-01-02 Thread Jeff Powell
Thanks much. Your third link is a great one. I'm not at the office now
- which is where the machine in question resides - but when I get back
there on Monday morning I will give it a try. I've already logged in
remotely and installed all the packages mentioned in that thread. Many
were needed, and this may be the thing that fixes the world.

I'll make another post here on Monday sometime and let you know.

Again, thanks for the pointers! I hope the problem will be resolved
very soon.

[Bug 276980] Re: ndiswrapper bcm4306 rev 2 won't connect regression

2009-01-02 Thread Cliff
FYI, I have just tested WPA2 on Windows XP on this laptop and it
connects fine, so the hardware is capable of connecting to WPA2.

I have a multi-boot setup and XP connects fine every time, but Ubuntu
8.10 etc. never connects. This particular test was of the Ubuntu 8.10
that I have permanently installed on the hard drive. This installation
of Ubuntu 8.10 does connect to WPA(1) successfully.

** Summary changed:

- Intel 82801H sound card speakers not working
+ [Intel 82801H] sound card volume inaudibly low unless model=mitac specified

** Description changed:

I've tried everything to get this sound working. Headphones work fine,
they're loud and clear, but speakers don't work at all. I've recompiled
from alsa-source. I've recompiled from source files direct from ALSA.
I've tried adding various options in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. Nothing
  works.

What's more, alsamixer doesn't work. Whenever I try to run alsamixer, it
spits an error back at me (listed below), so I can't tell if the speaker
channel is just muted or not.

I'm running Kubuntu Hardy Beta, however the same problem occurred in

[Bug 313385] [NEW] losetup 32bit offset limit, hang, remaining defunct

2009-01-02 Thread AmenophisIII
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: util-linux

i made a dd image of my laptop drive and try to work with it (mount,
resizing etc).

# losetup -a
/dev/loop0: [fe01]:29253634 (/image.dd)

# fdisk -lu /dev/loop0

Disk /dev/loop0: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7752 cylinders, total 117210240 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x46514650

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/loop0p1 * 63 8814959 4407448+ b W95 FAT32
/dev/loop0p2 8814960 11721023954197640f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/loop0p5 8815023 11721023954197608+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

the first partition is about 4,5GB, the rest is a logical partition.
i first tried to use http://vytautas.jakutis.lt/node/26 but that did not work
and i did not look into it, because i knew of the offset method as described
here http://www.fluidsignal.com/en/publications/knowledge/20080923090245 .
so... i tried to use the losetup -o option to create loop devices for the
partitions.
offset = start block * 512
offset p1 = 63 * 512 = 32256
=> losetup -fo 32256 /dev/loop0
this worked ok (can't redo atm, see below)

offset p5 = 4513291776
this is > 2^32.
if i try to use that offset, it seems to work ok the first time (it returns
instantly), but does not create a new loop device.
if you try it again, it hangs with consuming 100% cpu time of one core.
i straced it afterwards:

stat("/dev", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=14560, ...}) = 0
stat("/dev/loop", 0x7fff3d71f7e0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
stat("/dev/loop0", {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(7, 0), ...}) = 0
open("/dev/loop0", O_RDONLY)= 3
ioctl(3, 0x4c03, 0x7fff3d71f6f0)= 0
close(3)= 0
stat("/dev/loop1", {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(7, 1), ...}) = 0
open("/dev/loop1", O_RDONLY)= 3
ioctl(3, 0x4c03, 0x7fff3d71f6f0)= -1 EOVERFLOW (Value too large for

ioctl(4, 0x4c00, 0x3) = -1 EBUSY (Device or resource busy)
close(4)= 0
close(3)= 0
here it loops:
stat("/dev", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=14560, ...}) = 0
stat("/dev/loop", 0x7fff3d71f7e0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
stat("/dev/loop0", {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(7, 0), ...}) = 0

ioctl(4, 0x4c00, 0x3) = -1 EBUSY (Device or resource busy)
close(4)= 0
close(3)= 0
rinse repeat

i searched for help and found
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/redhat-fedora-linux-help/111777-losetup-offset-there-limit-overflow.html
that indicates, that there was a bug and it was fixed before 2.13-pre7.
i use util-linux 2.14-1ubuntu2
but maybe its an amd64 bug, since im running 64bit ubuntu 8.10.

after trying a too big offset, it is broken until reboot:
i cant use a small offset.
i cant detach the whole disk image.
i cant rmmod loop.

ill reboot now and strace the first run with a too big offset.

Closing as expired due to about 2 months with no reply with requested
information. Feel free to reopen with the info if the problem still
exists in jaunty.

You should always at *least* include lspci -vvnn output so we can know
what card you're using. From the symptoms it sounds like you maybe have

sound).

[Bug 287932] Re: 'Unlock' button is grayed out in system tools

I can confirm I have the same problem using this time FreeNX to manage a

I understand that this is expected behavior but like Robert, I was
unable to set the correct policies. Is there a way to bypass PolicyKit
for a specific user, for all admin tasks done remotely (in my case, Nx)
?

Thanks !

[Bug 210865] Re: Intel 82801H sound card speakers not working

2009-01-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
I also have a 82801H audio controller, and also ran into this problem of
the volume being so low as to be nearly inaudible (I could barely hear
it if I connected the output to my stereo receiver and cranked it up to
max).

Adding this option to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base solved it for me:

  options snd-hda-intel model=mitac

I also found that Front was set to 70%, so tinkering around in alsa-
mixer got my volumes to exactly as I wanted them.

[Bug 272645] Re: encryption + edubuntu desktop don't mix.

2009-01-02 Thread Jordan Mantha
Have you by chance tried this with the final release of 8.10? It's
rather unlikely that Edubuntu would make your system unbootable as it's
just educational apps on top of Ubuntu. If you really had a
LVM/encryption bug it would be from the Ubuntu side of things, in which
case we need to retarget this bug.

if you put "wins" after "dns", it should only be slower, if there is no dns

if you put wins before, it would try to lookup all names with wins imho.

[Bug 313379] [NEW] Shares disappear from Nautilus weekly

2009-01-02 Thread Gary V Deutschmann Sr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

About once a week at random, all shares both Windows and Ubuntu will disappear
from the Nautilus Places/Network.
This is a HARDWIRED LAN, NOT WIRELESS by the way. using SAMBA not NFS.

We have made no changes of any kind to the computers. They work fine
for about 3 or 4 days and Places/Network shows ALL of our shares with no
problem.

Then they will just disappear from Places/Network!

However, if you go to Go/Location and type in the IP address of each
machine, you can display the shares and mount them again and they work
fine, just don't show in Places/Network is all.

Also, all the shares appear in smbtree using terminal.
And you can PING each machine no problem.

>From any of the other 7 machines you can access the computer that is not
>showing the shares.
2 machines are Windows XP, 6 are Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy.

When Nautilus decides to act up, it's quite random, and can affect any machine,
usually not all of the machines.
It's like, well today is Friday, I think I'll just kick back and pester the
daylights out of the operator today and not let the shares show today.

Then tomorrow, not making a single change, shares start showing up
again.

I've been working with others to resolve this issue for over 3 months
now and NOBODY can find anything wrong with ANY of my configuration
files or Networking. I didn't expect they would, since everything works
fine. The only issue seems to be that at random, Nautilus just decides
it's NOT going to show shares in Places Network that day!

One other thing, your BUG REPORTING TOOL in Nautilus does NOT WORK EITHER!
Takes you to a page that displays the following:

Lost something?

There’s no page with this address in Launchpad.

Check that you entered the address correctly.

I didn't enter the address, I clicked on the LINK that Collects the
Information and sends it, then it sends you to a non-existent web page
here at Launchpad.

Thanks

TTUL
Gary

[Bug 286119] Re: firefox 3.0.3 crashes (no SIG) on most pages w images: 8.10beta AMD64

2009-01-02 Thread bongey
I have attached the patch from the samba
bug(https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5904) it fixed the problem on
my ibex x64 box but I think the upstream bug has the wrong component listed, I
think it should be winbind as the component. After building I am pretty sure
you just need to install the winbind*.deb package and that is all, it fixed the
problem for me. Write back if I am missing anything. I would submit a package
but I have no clue how to do it?
To build packages:
sudo apt-get install build-essential fakeroot dpkg-dev
mkdir -p ~/installs/samba/
cd ~/installs/samba
apt-get source samba(Note no sudo here , do want the files to be owned by
root)
sudo apt-get build-dep samba
dpkg-source -x samba_3.2.3-1ubuntu3.3.dsc
cd samba-3.2.3
patch -p1 --dry-run < samba_bug5904.patch
(if it says: patching file source/nsswitch/wins.c )
patch -p1 < samba_bug5904.patch
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b
sudo dpkg -i ../winbind_3.2.3-1ubuntu3.3_amd64.deb
add the wins section to your /etc/nsswitch.conf
sudo /etc/init.d/winbind restart
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Make sure you restart any programs that would be using dns.

Only problem I see is my browser "seems" to run slower with wins
enabled, but I have no quantitative proof only qualitative.

Overall I think they had a threading issue in samba that causes the
crash , the patch puts a mutex in and some other things.

A135 S4447 sound not working (intrepid)
After moding the [ alsa-base ] file with the command:

sudo pico /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

and add this to the bottom of the file:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

Sound works AND the head phones work BUT they do not switch. The
speakers are on even when the headphones are inserted. As of now, i am
using ubuntu intrepid.

it helps, because now gethostbyname() will try DNS before WINS, and so
most concurrent request (mostly those of browsers) will never reach the wins
library.
but if they would, for example if the DNS servers are down temporarily,
they would crash.

im not sure how mdns works, but in most cases [NOTFOUND=return] does
not make sense (it would never try dns, mdns4 or wins, if mdns4_minimal
could not find the host. see
http://gnu.huihoo.org/glibc-2.2.3/html_chapter/libc_28.html).

(sorry if this mail, does not work as intended. i used the webinterface
till now)
