i am still using a wins server as that is the only way i get consistent results
even with the xp machines.
new jaunty installs do not network smoothly (ie connections may or may not work
with mostly may not work)
as soon as i add the wins server ip address to smb.conf -and restart samba -
I'm marking this invalid as I can't reproduce it and I believe it only
happens after installing nonnative windows files in a particular way.

I confirm João's comment above. With the official jaunty release
2.6.3-0ubuntu9, video players crash when directed to use xv. Telling
gstreamer not to use xv works around it.
In my case, video in vlc/mplayer/totem works fine initially, but if one
forces a repaint of the screen, X will crash.

I was able to use the steps in comment

It seems like most of the trouble with upgrading an old 7.04 is because
of the files being on old-releases.ubuntu.com instead of

I too am seeing this same problem with Ubuntu 9.04 and my Microsoft
Intellimouse Explorer 4.0
If the mouse is moving, the mouse scroll wheel does not work. This
problem did not exist when I was on 8.04. I upgraded to 8.10, just so I
could upgrade to 9.04, so I didn't try it under 8.10.
