I think I am seeing the same bug in 9.04. I get asked for the root
password, if I change the username to a user with sudo access and enter
that password it fails. I can get sysetem-config-printer to work by
running it from the terminal with sudo.

I just upgraded my BIOS and the problem is gone. The system is
responding and I can login on a console. The HDD is obviously
detected/reconnected correctly. I can work with the applications that
were open and can open new applications as well.

I can confirm this workaround is working and have fixed other issues as
well (Bug #345119).
However I'm now not able to change the Virtual Setting and it's fixed on
2048 x 2048.

Basically nothing was printed in xorg.log or dmesg leading up to the freeze, I
know for sure that the line:
Changing OV0_BASE_ADDR from 0xe000 to 0xe5c0
was appended to xorg.log before the lockup happened.

Seems to be a problem with old system-wide configuration files of tex-common.
A solution that worked once is:
$ sudo apt-get --purge remove tex-common
... and then reinstall texlive
Can anyone confirm that this works more than once?

To add/remove tools from quickbuild you can use the Add/remove/Up/Down

notification indicator applet (which reinvents what this plugin does,
