OK I installed an old version of clamav and its dependencies and forced
the versions in synaptic, so I could reinstall dansguardian. I will undo

Just had a chance to test. I removed my manual install of the Mapnik python
bindings, purged and re-installed 'python-mapnik' package, ensured both
python2.5 and python2.6 were installed, and then was able to successfully do:
import mapnik
when running the python interpreter both with
Oops...didn't sudo lspci -vvnn. New lspci -vvnn is attached.
I see a SATA interface on IRQ 16 with my sound card, but it doesn't seem
to know what pin the sound card is on.

You are describing a BIOS initiated safety shutdown.
Most BIOS's will shut down the system immediately when the temperature
hits a prescribed limit.
I would run memtest (boot the ubuntu CD and select memtest) for a 24
hour period and see when it shuts down, reboot the PC after a few
minutes go
