We recently patched an issue with xsplash that was causing it to hang on all
UNR installations. If this happens to you, please try a Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a
terminal screen. Assuming you can do this and login, you should be able to
kill xsplash, and then run:
1) sudo apt-get update
2) sudo apt-get

Jaunty was shipped with a bug that if the user tries to query the status
of the nut daemons it, it returns the wrong information.

Affirmative. When this happened to me, I was not using any non-free drivers.
I should also mention for the record that there were no serious
consequences; Apport notified me about the oops after resume, and I carried
on working normally.
