boot with quiet and splash removed from the kernel command line to
see what's going on .. adding debug or debug=y to the kernel command

is GRUB or something kills the bash prompt and then powers down the computer.

AFAIK there's nothing to fix for karmic. Karmic's cryptsetup is already
fixed as it clears the superblock of newly created partitions. It's the
old versions of cryptsetup that are broken and it might be a good idea
to patch them up for every release which still is officially supported.
Anyway IMO
I can confirm the same problem on my karmic install.

I can confirm it works. The only issue I had was

Thank-you. This is shaping up to be a real nice release.
Most times it is not a fatal problem but it does hang some times on
resume or the system becomes really unstable with kernel errors.

Occured right now with karmic with all updates.

Yeah, should not be too hard to fix (i.e. refuse to remove logged in
users), for the next Ubuntu version I guess.
Note that if you can't remove a user that is not currently logged in
*and* you're using a completely up-to-date (as of today) Karmic system,
then it's another bug that I'd really like
