This bug affects me and I don't even use KDE, but do use the KDM login manager
over GDM because I like it.
A user called doctordruidphd on the Ubuntu forums has given a workaround that I
have tested to work on several systems I have that are affected.

sudo mv failsafe-x.conf
Seems to be fixed now - I'm able to change from gdm to kdm without any
hickups. If kdm is selected I have a working X but cannot change to
console (the console's picture is all white with colourful stripes
flowing in the picture from the top).

I'm running 9.10 and I'm still having the problem. I tried booting with
the reboot=b option and that didn't help out either. I'm now running
Linux kernel 2.6.31-16

When ever a song is played on totem. The visual Goom Goom freezes up
whenever the user seeks new songs and does the rewind/fastforeward
functions.

I think another big question is one I try to suggest an answer to, but
am not 100% positive. Why is it tripping into bulletproof X to begin
with? Surely, Bulletproof or failsafe X should be fixed, but it
shouldn't be loading in the first place in this case. As to fixing a
broken X, I'm still used
I have the same issue in 9.10 with the 2.6.31.16.29 kernel updates. The
camera shows up in lsusb, but nothing can actually access it (no
/dev/video0)

Ok, so there definitely is a PulseAudio component, but I can't tell
immediately if it's due to some SHM bogosity on your system (linux
problem? eglibc problem?)
Please confirm that using enable-shm = no at least makes sound events
audible in empathy and runs stably. That latter point is vital.
