For Ubuntu 10.04, here's a debdiff to update to 14.2.

I don't have two screens so can't reproduce a crash that way. Apart from
the user-switcher app causing the crash, the only other time I've seen
it is after a normal (first user) logout - when X re-initializes it
just hangs using 100% CPU before the gdm login window appears.

Xorg freeze
I discovered a cause/fix for this bug. If I launch 'minicom -D
/dev/ttyUSB0' (or anything that will properly initialize the serial
port) prior to my program, it works perfectly and doesn't emits any
kernel messages.
So this bug is caused by invalid initialization of TTY device. Hope this

Installing pristine 10.04 netbook remix did not work, but upgrading it to
2.6.32-22 made wireless alive to some degree. Scanning worked, I could see my
neighbors routers, but I
fixed by syncing 1.3.6-2 from Debian.

Indeed with Alex's line in the blacklist there is no problem and the
boot time has been dramatically improved; no camera of course. I am a
new newbie and I just wrote that the power manager might be the problem
because it doesn't use the latest upower version (0.9.4) but a previous
one. I've tried
the kde frontend I mentioned is indeed usb-creator-kde. I also think
you were correct about the problem I mentioned. As such I subscribed to
the bug.
I'd love to see this bug squashed but it looks like I'll have to wait
for bug 458482 to be fixed; otherwise I can't test it.

Finally got there, thanks to your advice.
Now have the newer Ubuntu desktop, etc. and it seems more stable.
Firefox wakes up at once, the windows have stopped disappearing down a black
hole at the bottom of the screen - and now minimise properly.

You can turn off the dmesg spam from rt2500 by adding the following line to
/etc/rc.local:
'iwconfig wlan0 power off' without the quotes, of course.
