I'm not sure; the symptoms are pretty different.
The best way to make sure would be to check whether the
/proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc/jar file (or equivalent) is present on the systems
where Thunderbird cannot open the attachments and missing on the others, and
whether adding it breaks things. This
JFI: tried to search for this on Launchpad to find similar bugs, but it
times out (reported as bug 611741).

I've done some further testing, and have two more observations to

1. Using the aforementioned 2.6.31 kernel with stock Ubuntu X11 packages
works beautifully---no PPA packages are needed. (In fact, with the xorg-

I am also surprised that functionality is omitted from the Ubuntu OOo
that is in the standard build.
This bug is affecting me as I do not use Evolution, but instead the far
superior and cross-platform Mozilla Thunderbird.

I have three SATA hard drives. sda has Ubuntu 10.04-x86 on it, sdb
Windows 7 and sdc Ubuntu 10.10-AMD64. The system boots from sda and if
that version of Ubuntu updates a new linux image Grub correctly enters
it in the menu.

This appears to be the same problem I raised as question #119397 on
Canonical SSO provider. The only difference was that this time an error
box popped up.
