I just took delivery of a new HDD and tried 10.10 again, but this time
by trying to go via an update to 10.04 rather than a clean 10.10 install
from the 10.10 DVD iso.

I have the same problem, DSL support is completely broken in
KNetworkManager. I can create a connection but I can't select it from
the KNetworkManager widget. Neither does it auto-connect if selected.
This should be fixed in an LTS version!
