I have more information about this. I noticed that when the kernel panic
occurs, my DVD drive was being accessed just like my floppy drive was
being checked for a disk. I ejected the DVD and rebooted. With no disks
in my drives the kernel panic doesn't occur on boot. If I have a DVD or

If I remove splash from the linux line in grub, I don't get the screen
corruption.
This would be a fine solution if I could get it to stick. It seems I
have to do this manually every time I reboot. I've tried removing
splash from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= in the file /etc/default/grub

you appear to be running an older kernel (2.6.31-20-generic), for which

Build failed on Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1 with latest updates
I've worked around this problem (at least in the cases that it affects
me) by opening gconf-editor and adding sun-awt-X11-XFramePeer to
/apps/maximus/exclude_class.
But this is just a work around. I liked it when maximus worked fine with
java. As I recall it worked fine in Karmic.

Fabio, sorry for the delay, I wasn't on board...
I'm happy to say: the 10.04 live CD is booting on my Acer without
problems. Also some basic programs are running.
For the records: it also runs on my Asus Pundit2 PC (Model: P2-M2A690G)

Yes. I did not know about *nautilus-share* and I was more familiar with *
shares-admin* since it is still being used by the main Ubuntu-project.

Ahh.. found the answer to my question.
Here's how to get rid of most of plymouth, and thereby get rid of most
of the problems it causes, including this launchpad entried and numerous
others:
dpkg --get-selections| awk '/^plymouth-theme/{print $1}' | xargs sudo
apt-get purge

to get a print-job output I have to do the following after booting the system:
1. Delete the (correcly recognized) printer from the panel shown up after
selecting
